Is this recent? Will those CCs feed at the surface like in December?

As with most fish, CC feeding activity will depend heavily on water temperature. Since CC are a warm water fish their feeding frequency and activity dramaticaly slows down in water below 60F compared to cool and cold water fish. Feeding further slows below 50F when CC are very sluggish and hesitant to come to the surface to feed. When water gets below 42F feeding is very infrequent, but does occur occassionally. Digestion at 39F-42F is slow and any foods eaten at these temperatures lasts probably for one to several weeks to maybe a month depending on the food item/s and quantity consumed. I have raised bullheads in a cage that were fat fish going into winter and did not feed them anything from November to April (150 days 39-42F water temp)and fish survived okay. I have caught the occassional CC ice fishing thus I do know that they will eat the occassional item in cold water under ice cover conditions.

CC are usually the first to stop coming to feeders when it begins cool down in the fall. Stop well ahead of bluegill.
