I read that if you have shale bedrock that it is ok for holding water and limestone bedrock will leak. Is this true? How do you tell the difference in shale and limestone bedrock?

A geologist can tell you. Limestone is porous (has pore space between the grains of sand and lime while shale is much less (almost none) porous. Shale can form an impervious barrier but is also subject to fracturing. Either can leak depending on the circumstances.

Yeah i wasnt sure if it would hold or not with bedrock thats why i was askin. On my land there is bedrock so i wasnt sure if building a pond would be a good idea or not . I always wanted a pond. I think i have good clay but was concerned about bedrock.

Either can be covered with good clay to make a seal. You need a pro pond builder to advise. Check with Dave Sefton.
