The leaves just started to turn colors this past week. The sky has become the brilliant blue we only see this time of year. It would be fun to see what it looks like around the country during the season of falling leaves, and before the season of falling snow starts. My pond this morning:

I have always noticed the difference of the sky color during the fall, but the few people I have mentioned it to, never noticed. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Not much here yet either.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I'll say! And the fish growing season is long too!

Greg, Speaking of long growing season... Any largemouth bass made their way to your parts? I see Japan has them and so does China. In fact China raises largemouth bass for food fish.

Got to my pond today. No shiners for bait, so I was catching bluegill with mealworms and waxworms, and then live-lining the bluegill. I got (3) LMB over 20" (yes, I'm weak; no pictures) and I lost one, and missed three others. Fall hits quick:

The leaves are changing fast in southern PA... I would say a good 50% there now. Beautiful view of your pond Sunil.

Just putting the bluegill on a large hook and throwing him back out for bait. Maybe I'm not using the right name for it.

Sunil, I've heard the term before and knew what you meant. I've heard it more on Salt Water than fresh.

Just putting the bluegill on a large hook and throwing him back out for bait. Maybe I'm not using the right name for it. I've done that a few times in some bigger lakes and have caught 2 nice LMB, probably pushing 5 pounds. Kind of a cool fishing technique.

Sometimes, I'd only have to wait about 1 minute. Other times it took over 15 minutes. Plenty of time to drink some beers and relax on the boat while waiting. Funny thing is that you really don't visually see these larger LMB in my pond, but they're in there.

With the real key being on the "drinking some beer" part! It's funny, but I had pretty similar experiences on the lake where I used this technique - fairly quick results once and the other time took maybe 20-30 minutes. Didn't have any beer with me, though.

Our colors are changing fast. This picture was taken yesterday evening as the sun was just behind the trees. The fish are still shy and refusing to cooperate. Yesterday morning, as we stepped out the back door on our way to church, there were about 10 does and fawns down by the pond. I think they were getting advice from the fish about the best hiding techniques as the fall season opens soon. Ken

Our colors have suddenly started changing overnight too although our temps are unseasonably warm. Of course leaf color changes are due more to photo period anyway.
Wish I could upload a pic but my computer is still in the shop due to some nasty viruses that overrided the best virus protection money can buy, including a monthly fee I pay to a computer service. Apparently the viruses out there are getting more sophisticated all the time. It may be time to get an Apple which I am temporarily using right now.

We've probably hit the best colors by now. I took these wide angle photos with my cell phone this evening near sunset: One more rain storm, or one more wind storm, and it will be pretty dull. Ken

Very nice Ken... We took the drive along Skyline Drive this past weekend and they were pretty much at peak. Some of the high elevations were a bit past. Very pretty! Even had a black bear run across the road in front of us... He didn't wanna stay still for a good photo though! Looked like a pretty food forest fire was burning on a distant ridge...

Travis,
This is absolutely the best time of the year to start at Front Royal or Luray, and head south into North Carolina. After the kids were gone, and when we still had our motor home, we would take several days to make the trip. My most favorite places were "Peaks of Otter" and "Hungry Mother." In either place, it seemed that no matter what camping spot we had, we still needed 2-3 feet of elevation on at least one set of wheels to get us anywhere near level.
But, there is nothing like a fresh butterflied trout breakfast with eggs and home fries, enjoyed against a backdrop of beautiful lakes and mountains of incredible color.
We sure are fortunate to live in such a beautiful and bountiful area!
Ken

Yes, Peaks of Otter is a beautiful area along the way. The lake there was recently renovated and quite beautiful again. There used to be a wild elk herd in the area, but I have herd they have since gone extinct again. We are very fortunate where we live!

There used to be a wild elk herd in the area, but I have herd they have since gone extinct again. I hadn't heard that about the elk. But, I know they are tying very hard to re-establish elk to this area, and the elk are struggling. Here is the most recent statement I am aware of from the VGDIF: Virginia Elk Harvest From my understanding of the issue, a fair number of Virginia elk moved across the line into WV. But, they too are struggling. Here is an old link to what is being done in WV: Elk Plan in WV
