One thing I've learned from this site is that I need to measure my environment and fish population better. The recent PondBoss articles spoke of measuring various things, especially water temperature to guide fertilization, etc.
(By the way, Bob, that was a fabulous article which broke down activity by temperature - it cleared up a lot of questions for me)
What methods do you guys use? Any special thermometers that I need to check-out? I'm thinking of just using a floating swimming pool thermometer tied to the dock. Any better suggestions? As always, thanks for the best advice on the Net.

Dave, I keep two inexpensive ones in my truck all the time. Bass Pro Shops sells a nice one for the dock, and Aquatic Eco-Systems has several nice ones in their catalog. As a matter of fact, there are several advertisers in Pond Boss who sell quality products. Give them a call.

Ditto. AES as a couple with probes that you could mount on a pier post and suspend the probe several feet down. They aren't that expensive.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I use the AES cheap thermometers in my hatchery, and they work fine. But, I recommend always using the same one for a consistent measurment of change in water temperature, because each thermometer can vary by a couple degrees. If you have one that reads 2 degrees low, and another that reads 2 degrees hi, you may think that you had a 4 degree temperature change, when it's actually just a faulty reading.

I actually have a rather cheap and effective method I've implemented... I went to Bass Pro and bought a digital boat temperature gauge, that's designed to be mounted in a console, which comes with 25' of wiring. I located the readout portion a few feet up from where I tie my boat up. I attached a small sinker to the sensor, tossed it out about 20 feet, and voila!
