I went fishing at my lake on Friday night with a good friend and he caught the biggest smallmouth bass I have ever seen in Illinois. Don't even ask how much it weighed or how long it was because we didnt have a scale or tape measure handy and we got that fish back in the water ASAP after a quick pic. I can safely say that I have never personally seen a bigger smallmouth and that the state record is not too far off for that fish. She is 8 years old and hopefully has another productive growing season or two left!

Just awesome!! I never hold fish by the gill like that, but see it done often. Does that really not damage them? Is that a preferred method? I also shutter when I see a massive lmb held by the jaw. No, I'm not a member of PETA.

He has hold of his lower lip but I have been told on bigger fish if you pull down to hard the weight of the fish can actually break their jaw. Not sure if that's true or not though???
The only difference between a rut and a Grave is the depth. So get up get out of that rut and get moving!! Time to work!!

My buddy in Texas has a poster that was published by the TPWD that shows how to and how not to hold LMB. The next time I'm down there I'll take a picture of it. Here's a video that TPWD made: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1230248924140

We definitely dont touch the gills, except for pike and muskie. I havent caught a massive enough bass in Illinois yet that would break the jaw when held up with one hand. I can see potential problems with 10 lb plus fish, but not so much with massive Illinois bass.
