I stopped by my neighbor's house today and he is using a backhoe around the pond to dig it out a little larger. He is digging up clay and doesn't look like he is hitting rock.

Is this ok to do once your pond is stocked? Is there a leak issue?

His pond is about 3 years old and is only about 1/2 an acre and it is filled by a dry creek and run off from his cutover. The pond has only dropped about 12" since June. We have had our driest and hottest summer on record. So I think only 12" is good. Most ponds in our area are 2' to 3' low.
I started digging my pond this weekend. I have a lot of dirt to put somewhere MM

It depends on his soil. He might have a problem if he hits a vein of sand, but from what I've seen during the little bit of a drive thru your state this weekend, the soil holds water pretty good.

I renovated my pond with the fish still in it and only lost 1 BG during the renovation.

Thanks. He just built a damn and flooded timber. No leaks.
I don't believe we have any sand in this soil. Just different colors of clay form org. to deep red. and solid rock about 8 foot down.

What part of VA are you in? I can tell you most of VA you don't have to worry about it, the red clay is dominant less you live closer to the beach, closer to the mountain areas is full of rock so no worries there. The red clay holds water no matter what, there is also grey clay which holds water just as good.

Then I know your area well smile Defiantly don't worry about leaks, the clay around here is perfect for holding water, which is about the only thing its good for lol.
