Hi guys,
The Iowa DNR stocked about 500 BG 1-3 inches in our pond (about 2 acres) last October, and we added 1000 FHM we bought at a local fish farm. A few weeks ago we sunk a couple wood pallets in 2-3' of water to help the FHM spawn out. Our water temperature out here is mid to upper 60's, however I have yet to see any sign of a BG or FHM anywhere in the pond this year. We're only out there on weekends, but I thought by now I'd have seen something. The GSF are spawning in the public lake nearby. Since there are no BG beds in my pond, I thought maybe they were still too small and wouldn't spawn until they were larger.... but not seeing any fish yet has me a little concerned! Thanks for any insight!

What did you use to sink the pallets?

Will the BG still spawn if I have an FA problem around the banks? Just wondering if they would either spawn underneath it or out in deeper water?

Mine are clearing out nests right in the middle of it. I've also seen them clear out and push down Chara in a nice little bird nest kind of appearance. Don't worry bluegills will find a way. They are very prolific!
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

MRHello,
I used a couple cinder blocks on each pallet, which seems to do the job nicely. Since our pond has 3-4 ft left to be completely full, I attached cable to each pallet so I can pull them up as the water rises and keep them in that 2-4 zone, which correct me if I'm wrong, is where the FHM prefer to spawn. I want lots of minnows in there for my bass to chow on by next spring!

My FHM's spawned last month already. Course I am sure its warmer here quicker. Esshup it right I have about 5 or 6 tires in the water in different spots in about 2 foot of water or less and they really like hanging around them. I am sure your pallets are fine but I would take Esshup's advice and move them in a little. My FHM's don't like going past the 2 foot range toooooo dangerous out there in the 3 to 4 foot range. Too many big mouths out there if you know what I mean!!
The only difference between a rut and a Grave is the depth. So get up get out of that rut and get moving!! Time to work!!

Ok I'll bring those pallets in a bit, thanks. I'm taking some tires out this weekend to drop those in too. Six or so. Would you guys recommend I put them all shallow in 2ft, or mix them up? Originally I thought I'd scatter them flat in 3-6 ft, and fill the shallower ones halfway with sand. What do you think would benefit the maximum number of fish? In the end it will be a LMB,BG, & CC pond. I hear the FHM don't usually persist with all those predators around...

Tires that sounds like a good idea, I just need to find some. What else makes a good spot for them? How long with they spawn? What keeps the bass and HBG out of the tires and pallets to feed on them?
Will floating pallets work?
If the FHM get eaten up with the HBG feed on the Coppernose spawn?
