Hello,
This long winter I was going through some of my back issues of pond boss. In the aeration issue I learned (correct me if I'm wrong) that pond areators do not transfer oxygen directly to the water. The poorly oxygenated water is moved to the surface where it can then absorb more oxygen. I usually haul my own fish. I use agitators. I will often supplement (particulary trout) with oxygen. My question is: do oxygen diffusers in transport tanks transfer oxygen directly to the water? If not, then am I not accomplishing much more using the agitators? Almost all transporters I know use either straight oxygen or aggitators and oxygen.
Thanks for your help,
Steve

SS, yes the diffusers put in pure oxygen into the water. We use both oxygen and agitator especially with trout because it helps break up Co2 in the hauling tank. The smalelr the bubbles the more transfer you get with the diffuser I recommend point four system. To clarify a surface agitator does put oxygen in the water in the pond. It does this by brekaing up the water and capturing air but does add lots of oxygen in the area. Bottom diffused aeration is more abotu what you refer it moves water...

SS, diffused aeration works the same whether it's in a pond or in a tank. As the bubbles rise to the surface through the water coulmn, they transfer the oxygen in the bubble to the water. When you hear people talk about moving water with bubbles they are usually talking about outdoor ponds or air lifts. The bubbles are still transfering oxygen, but its more the lifting action that you are after. In tanks, hauling or holding, diffused or "bubble" aeration is usually your best bet. Greg hit it right on the head that bubbles and agitators are the best 1-2 punch for hauling tank aeration and that the smaller the bubble, the more O2 you get.

SS, With a point four ceramic oxygen diffuser, the bubbles are so fine the water can absorb then before they reach the surface.
