Went up to Basswood Lake in the BWCAW with my brother last weekend on our annual trip to fish the opener. They had a record early ice-out, and it seemed as if everything was about a month ahead of schedule -- smallies were already on the beds and the pike had mostly moved out of the shallows.

Anyhow, we had a great trip and excellent weather with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s each day. No clouds or much of a breeze, which made walleye fishing a bit difficult. But the one afternoon with a stiff breeze and cloudy skies yielded a quick limit of 'eyes to bring back for the freezer:

The rest of the time was spent fishing for bass and pike, and we caught plenty of both.

I got my personal best smallie -- 19 inches and about 6lbs. -- on a tube bait. She was a PIG:

Oddly enough, I caught three big largemouth on the trip -- a 4 pounder and two that tipped the scales right at 5 pounds. I'm told it's pretty odd to catch two 5+ pounders in just a couple of days. Our guide said that a 5 lb. Northern MN largemouth may be more than 15 years old. Don't know if that's true or not...

Here I show little brother how it's done -- LMB vs. SMB:

Overall, a fantastic trip to one of my favorite places in the world. I'm already looking forward to next year and the sunset view from our cabin: cool

Hey Dan, we love it when you southern boys get hooked on the north country!! smile Great pictures!!

Of course, I do need to admit that fishing Richmond Hill sure got a northern boy hooked on southern fishing (and especially on Lusk management strategies).

That smallie is just brutal!
