I have a 3/4 acre with an average depth of about 8'. The pond is only 2 years old kidney shaped. The pond is on my vacation property that I may only get to every other weekend. I started aeration last spring with good results. I noticed on my last trip that my pump was no longer working so I have purchased a new pump and plan on restarting the system next weekend. Since the pond is only 2 years old and has previously aerated do I need to be cautious about start up? I am planning on running a couple hours a day for the 4 days and then going back to dusk to dawn on the fourth day. Thoughts are appreciated!!

1.) How long has the aeration system not been operating?
2.) How many diffusers are in the pond?
3.) Have you stocked the pond since it was built, if so how many fish?
4.) Have you checked the temperature at the surface and at the bottom?

Temperature will let you know that stratification has occured. If so, most likely there are some areas of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide gases that will require to be released a little each day by following a start up proceedure.

If no temperature difference (with in 1-3 degrees) is present, then you should be able to start up and run 24/7.

Best fishes,

The aerator has been down about 10 days. I have a membrane diffuser on each end of the pond. I did not check temps, i would think they would be ok. I stock the pond last year with about 60 LMB, 250 HBG and 50 CC. I have since added about 75 adult bluegill and or sunfish.
