MY POND NEEDS A DOSE OF CUTRINE PLUS FOR ALGEA CONTROL. IT IS THE GRAULAR FORM. WILL THIS HARM BLUEGILLS OR BASS THAT ARE SPAWNING? I UNDERSTAND TO DO ONLY A PORTION OF THE POND AND NOT THE ENTIRE POND AT ONCE.

Hi.

I am no expert on this. However, I sprayed my pond edges in two phases about two weeks ago. I did each side about 4 days apart amid it cleaned up the algea. I called my local fish farm and the guy had a coronary saying that I probably nukes any eggs which had not hatched.

He was going to do it in about two weeks, but I didn't want things getting out of control with the algea and I figured doing it in two phases would help it dilute.

I have no idea if it hurt the eggs deep down, and I personally doubt it. However, I just wanted to let you know what was told to me about it.

I am sure someone with some expert advice will be along shortly to expand on my shared information on this.

Goodluck!

rcooked - who was the fish hatchery that you called? Just curious. Spraying two weeks ago (april 7-10) and spawning fish is somewhat puzzling. What kinds of fish do you have in your pond. Around Marion OH, Bass will not spawn until May BG early mid June catfish June.

Bill:

This has been a weird Spring. Both my neighbor and I have a few LMB on the beds in the ponds. His started bedding (April 13th) 4 days prior to mine, but his pond is about 40% the size of mine and shallower.

I think that blast of really warm weather for a week in the 80/90's has the fish jump started a bit... The water temp was 74 at the surface a little over a week ago and is now 62! But 1/3 of an acre ponds that are only 8' deep will swing widely like that. We had a frost two nights ago and day time temps in the 90's less than 2 weeks ago.

Citrine Plus and all algie killers will harm your fish expecally their breeding cycles. I know of several ponds that the poisons have totally killed the fish. If its not distributed evenly, when the water is cool. And the gallons to poison ratio is not exact you will risk loosing everytrhing. If you want to stop algae growth for good the only way to do it is to first cheak the PH levels in your pond they are probably way to acidic from years of organic roting in the bottom. So you are just killing acid with more poison. I have a pond with only a rimm of algae two feet around the edge. This is good it will provide cover for your bass, and especally the babies. They will feel happy. To stop the algae from covering your pond you need to first know how deep your pond is. I am guessing it is two feet deep. Or at least in some areas. Hair algae will constantly grow from the bottom. You will not stop this even with poison. The hair algae will come back a month later. You will need to rent a small tractor and dig the shallow spots at least four feet deep. Make the sides steep. Rental places will rent you a tractor for a day for two hundred bucks. Plant some small reeds to controll the erosion. And maybe a few small trees for shade. To decrease the acid levels throw in a peace of fresh cement. The lime will lower the acid levels. You will never have to worry about algae again. Garanteed!

I was not trying to tell you how to have a pond. The truth is if the chemical balance of the pond is not right then the poison will harm the fish. Stagnant water with poison is trouble. These products are tested on balanced ponds with algae blooms. The other thing I didn't mention was your aration. My pond is the most beautiful pond I have ever seen. I have never used poison. The water in my pond is clear. It is a clay bottom pond. If you really cared about your fish. You would do this. First get the chemical balance right.

My FA starts off growing as deep as 11' in winter. We've had spawning temps for almost two weeks in some BOWs in Central OH. What advantage does fresh concrete have over lime or limestone?

Hi guys.

I've got some Yellow Perch that were close to spawning, but I don't think I would have zapped them, I really don't. I didn't put that much in.

My pond is coming up on the 1 year old mark in July and the bottom is clean (no trees around). The warm weather might have jump started some of the fish, but I don't think I harmed it to much, as things have been getting pretty cool here again in the evenings in central Ohio.

Going to get the aeration stone sunk this weekend (I hope) and that will help move forward, I am sure.
