Use a pond aerator as an option to oxygenate the pond. Good ventilation is essential to have a healthy pond, water garden or lake, no matter what time of year. Use a pond aerator during the warmer periods to provide the necessary oxygen in the pond. Use a pond aerator during the winter, not only to provide oxygen to the pond (and fish in them), but also to provide water flow to the surface to maintain a top area of the pond from freezing. This opening in the ice allows fresh oxygen to the entry and exit holes for toxic gases from the decomposition of organic matter in the pond to escape.
