Has anybody heard of a carp hatchery? And I am not talking about the Grass Carp but about any of those European Carps that are so popular on the Old Continent. I would like to open such fishery but cannot find anobody who knows anything about it and it doesn't seem like there is one in the USA. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Europeans definitely are crazy about carp. Most of us here wish they'd have stayed back in the old country (the carp, not the Europeans).

Peter, we have one of the most valuable resources we could ever have--ewest! In addition to being one of the nicest people you could ever meet, he has an ability to do searches that borders on the cosmic.

There is a carp fishing group in this country that should be able to help you.

A while back I ran across a DVD on "Bream Fishing". I played it, thinking I would see how others catch bream. Did I ever get a hilaroious surprise! The DVD was produced in Britan. The host pronounced "bream" to rhyme with "cream". He used smelly dough balls to chum the fish, and maggots for bait. He used a (I kid you not!) ~30' pole, and when he hooked a fish, he landed it by feeding the pole in longitudinally instead of raising the tip. Finally, the "bream" although a handsome fish, appeared to be in the carp family. The host seemed to be a little put off when he caught one that fought well. He almost seemed apologetic about them "whizzing around". I almost cracked a rib!

But,,, I'm sure he would find our fish and fishing techniques just as odd. Some people in my area actually eat carp, but they admit it's far from being their favorite.

I have always heard it pronounced "brim".

In central Texas it's pronounced "perch".

I think what we have here is a dialect standoff. South of the Mason-Dixon line, it's "brim." I'm not sure what it is in Yankee country, but since Theo is one of the most knowledgable yanks I know, I'm guessing it's "bream."

Can we all say bluegill? Maybe Redear?

In Miss., we called it a feast, with onions, fries, an hushpupppies. Yum yum.

I've never heard the term up North, only from y'all down South (and folks up here who are from down South). When I think it, I think "breem"; when I say it , I say "bluegill".

I understand I could really get in trouble if I ate my grits with ketchup.

If yer gonna do that, ya might as well show up at the trailer park and insult NASCAR.

Those southern guys laugh, but when I went to high school "down there" the fish most served in
restauants was carp. My neighbors, at first turn up their noses, but when confronted with "I'll just put him back" show their true colors and ask for it.
Look for aquaculture sites in Pa, carp are raised as food fish.
They are slow growing but probably grow forever and get to be huge. Bobad's tape is surprising as the euro carp guys have equipment that far out shines even avid bassers in the US. Visit carp.com for an amazing aray of gadgets, baits and general info.
I read an article about a UK 125 member club that had forty fish in their pond and most of the members had caught all of the fish at least once and they were looking to expand the number to 70.

I didn't intend to sound demeaning to the Brit fisherman. In fact, the 30' pole I saw was an amazing piece of technology. It looks exactly like my favorite 9' glass of graphite bream pole scaled up 3X. The handle must have been over 2" in diameter. I bet it cost a pretty penny.

No pictures of the pole, but they are indeed 30' long. No reel used. He just pulls the pole in like a rope.

You didn't. It was just that I was surprised at the information. Those guys are usually state of the art, big bucks, bell and whistles, so maybe the 30' rod is state of the art.

The British "Bream" look like a cross between a piranha and a freshwater drum.

Brim, Bream, Perch. I've always called them bluegills and sometimes even panfish. I used to call them yellow perch during spawning season. Until I figured out they were actually male bluegill in full spawning colors.
