Greetings from Kentucky,

I've been feeding my BG for the past two years. Several weeks ago I reduced the size of the feed to SOUTHERN STATES LIL' STRIKE 1/8" EXTRUDED - 36% CP, 6% CF, 5.5% CF, .9% P. This is almost identical, except in size, to the 1/4" BIG STRIKE I had been using.

I went with the smaller version to benefit my Fat Heads and YOY.

Now I notice that my 5 to 7" BG have started spitting out the smaller feed. About 20 % of the feed sinks and is eaten normally. But, the floating pellets may be sucked in and expelled several times before they are finally swallowed.

My thought is that the fish want a certain moisture content before they swallow the pellets for good. Most all of the pellets are finally eaten, but I'm wondering why they are taking these extra steps before swallowing them.

What say you?

How were the 5" - 7" BG handling the larger feed pelets before you switched?

Good hypothesis on moisture content.

I never noticed this action with the larger pellets. The 5 to 7" BG seemed to swallow them right away.

Another thought is that the food is loosing some of its natural moisture while setting opened in my garage during hot, dry weather. I use a bag about every 20 days.

It ought to last over 20 days with no problem. I have found feed that my fish just didn't like. I have no idea why. I always switch back to Purina.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I live on the Mammoth Cave Plateau in South Central Kentucky. this is Karst geology, cave country. Building ponds on top of the plateau is fairly easy. But, my three are in the valleys -- valleys riddled by sink holes. Consequently, my ponds are small - .6, .8, and .9 acres and shallow - 4' max. All are spring feed, only one has a spillway. I have overstocked LMB aiming at large BG.

I am amazed at the diversity of water conditions in three relatively close areas. No two are alike, each requires different management approaches. I struggled on my oun for 18 years and then found POND BOSS - what a revelation [read: salvation].

I feed once a day, by hand, walking the perimeters.
