I treated some Sago Pondweed with Hydrothol 191 granular about 4 days ago. No sign of any change in the weeds.
I thought Hydrothol 191 was rated for all Potomogeton (Pondweed) species? Am I just not waiting long enough or didn't use enough?
It has been mostly cloudy during those days. Perhaps that has slowed down the effects of the herbicide?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I used Aquathol last year. After 2 weeks I called the company thinking they sold me sugar cubes. They stated that it was designed to be a slow kill to avoid DO problems. Sure enough, at the end of the third week,like magic, the weed was gone. I guess the moral of the story is some of these chemicals are designed to be slow. That might be the case with the Hydrothol.

Ron,
Thanks. I hope that is the case. I felt that way when I sprayed my cattails. I was starting to worry if I didn't get enough of that particular herbicide on, but about 3 weeks later they are all dead and brown.

Cecil hydrothol and aquathol are similar and take time. They work on most pondweed (Potomogeton). I have used aquathol on them and it worked well. Took about 3 weeks.

Cecil, Have you noticed any changes to the weeds yet?? I just treated my pond yesterday with Hydrothol 191 as it has gotten a fairly heavy infestation of what looks like Sago also. I was also told where I bought it that it would take up to 10 days. Just wondering about yours--also hate to think I blew the money on the 191 for nothing!!

Yesterday I said the heck with it and went out with the weedcuter and whacked Sago Pondweed half away around the pond. I missed a few and will go out to whack those. I'm going to whack the other half of the pond soon. Even with the twice the recommended rate for Aquashade this Sago Pondweed was going nuts in up to at least 6 feet of water. I think I see one coming up in 8 feet of water! Next year I'm going with sonar or a similar product. Cheaper in the long run and my back is a little sore today. Oh just like you grass carp are out of the question. With you in Michigan they are not legal with me it's too expensive to have them delivered. Costs more to have them the delivered than the fish themselves. And the ones I have would rather eat the pellets.

Wow not good news, hopefully it works for me!! I'm not positive what I actually have but it's either the Sago, Southern Naiad, or widgeon grass. Look alot similar and not sure which one it is. All I know is its creeping all over the place and quickly. Some like yours appears to be growing in up to 6 feet of water.
I'll keep you posted how mine is doing. I applied the 40 lb bucket to my 1/3 surface acre pond along with some Cutrine. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

I use reward with lots of success. I see a weedbook I have mentions nothing about using Hydrothol 191 for Sago Pondweed. I says to spray a combination of Reward and Cutrine Plus

Hi all,
I have a customer with a Sago Pondweed problem in his irrigation reservoir. In general our company does not deal with chemicals. However, this customer is desperate to get control of the weed problem ASAP. DO crash is not a concern as he only keeps gambusa in the pond and there is plenty of aeration/ozone. The product needs to act quick as the retention time is only about 10 days this time of year. Also, the product cannot interfere with plant physiology.
Water Chemistry:
Hardness = 250 Alkalinity = 240 pH = >8.4 (off my chart but my guess would be about 8.8) Temp = 65-70 F
Can anyone recommend a product, application information, and source for such a product? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
