It has been a while since I wrote a post!

I have had success at cooling water in ponds too shallow for trout with bottom aeration device connected to a thermal control.

We use the C-10 thermal control from Kasco Marine (normally used for deicers) to turn off aeration when temperatures are 23 C (73F) or higher.

The idea is that the sun is likely to transfer heat to the cool bottom water that rises to the surface with the bottom aeration.

By turning the system off during hot days, I have had clients with 6 foot deep ponds, who used to lose all their trouts in the summer, keep their fish alive and well.

Cooler water holds more oxygen, and there are no long periods of time until the temperature drops low enough to recirculate the pond water around when it kicks in.

A small thermocline builds up in a few hours, surface water gets hot in the sun and bottom water still has enough oxygen and the right temperature for our trouts.

It saves a bit on the energy bill, it prolongs the life of the compressor, allows for still looking pond... etc.

Has anybody done similar approach? Observed other results? I would like to hear from you guys!

Regards

Mario, I have been doing this since last year, and I believe it really helps keep the temps. down.
My pond is only 8 ft. deep and the trout do fine in the summer, I have the compressor connected to a plug in thermostat and right now I have it set to turn on at 59 degrees.
It has to help cool the water especially on the cool nights, right now my pond temp at 5ft, is 56 degrees.

Here's the thermostat I use.

Very Interesting Guys.

What do you think of the Idea I just posted?

"Fountains affect on water temp?"
