Hello My Name is Dog...I'm not a Bounty Hunter.

This is my very first post and it's a 2 parter.

1. I bought a ranch several years ago, it had a 25 acre lake that was 75 years old and had started as a hunting/fishing club. I bought the ranch for hunting purposes but soon found out...I'm a closet pondaholic. This pond had not been dry in 75 years and had been stocked with Florida LMB, Crappie, Channel Cats and maybe a few others...I loved it...but just as I started getting into my new obsession my business partner was able to swindle the ranch from me. (Note to self... Don't trust business partners) I caught a 11 LB LMB and about a 13" Crappie before I wasn't allowed on my ranch anymore and I miss it terribly...oh yea and the deer hunting sucked \:\) I still dream about the "Lake".

2. Is there game software that anyone knows of which will allow you to complete the entire life cycle of pond/lake building from site selection to frying pan?

Thanks for a GREAT site!

Dog

P.S. I believe I will be buying a new ranch soon with a 10AC lake already stocked and managed \:\)

P.P.S. What is the difference between a pond and a lake? Size?

Howdy, DL, and welcome to the forum.

I can't recall any pond development/management software. Maybe you should talk to Electronic Arts about releasing "SimPond". Then again, my daughter would get it and refuse to let the fish sleep or go to the bathroom.

Yep, it's all about size. MY 5 acre BOW is a lake, YOUR 5 acre BOW is a pond. ;\)

Welcome to the forum Dog!

Sorry to hear about your situation with your former ranch. Things have a way of working out though...

Don't know of any software out there for that purpose, others may have an idea though...

Hopefully your new ranch will be 10x better than the last!

We've had this very discussion on here before. I think the consensus was, if it's your body of water, you can call it a pond or a lake, its yours after all... HAHA However, 10 acres seem to be the common cut off for pond to lake. Science sometimes defines a pond as a body of water in which aquatic plant life can grow along the whole bottom, with a lake being deep enough to shade out enough light to prevent plant growth. Or a body of water large enough to allow wave action...

Here is the official Texas definition.

A "POND" is a natural body of water.
A "LAKE" is natural or man made body of water.
A "TANK" is a man made farm or ranch body of water, size don't matter.

I never called or heard it called a pond (until I joined this group). When I was growing up in west Texas we always said "Let's go down to the Tank.

I have to agree "Tank BOSS" just doesn't sound as good as "POND BOSS"

LOL, Great feedback thx!

I always thought it may be like the whole pigs vs hogs comparison...where once a pig hits 300 lbs it becomes a hog...or something like that.

Cheers,

DL

OK, so my "pond" was a natural wetlands area that a man built a dam onto so that it would get deeper. It's never been intended or used for agriculture. It's about 4+ acres.

So, what do I call it? My fishin' hole?

You can call it a pond, lake, stock tank, Theo or Sunil. Heck, it's yours and you have the naming rights.

If you use "alternate" methods of fishing, you might want to name it Tom G.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Hi Dog,welcome to our cozy little pond web site.As far as a pond or a lake is concerned,if you let me fish and drink cold beer there,it will be reffered to as your lake.If I get to fish but not drink cold beer,it will be that ole pond I dont fish much.If I dont get to fish or drink cold beer there, well, thats when thoughts of things that explode come to mind. \:D \:D

Good Times! I get a picture in my head of a sunken kiddy pool with two guys sitting in lawn chairs and fishing poles drinking cold beer. Oh yea and there may be fishing.
