I have an existing pond that I am planning to put various types of habitat in (most of the ideas gleaned from this site). One type is a few groups of tires joined together.

Anyone have any tips for me regarding transporting them out to the location I want to set them (before i go out in the john boat and capsize)?

I'll work it out by my second or third try, but would appreciate any helpful hints... thanks!

They don't sink very well as air is trapped inside unless holes aer cut in them.

Every tire has 3 holes x 1.5" dia on the top of the sidewall, spaced out evenly, to expel air accumulation. They are between 9 and 6 feet below the normal pool, almost to the base of a slope that terminates at 12 feet deep. I don't think they will slide any farther...? I would feel better, tho, if they were fastened together. I really like the geometry and would like to maintain the mass in the form that it is right now. Should I tie them together? Thoughts?

He is right. I did this in my pond and to speed things up I used my cordless drill and the biggest bit I could find to quickly drill holes in them. Make your holes in several spots as the tires will just rotate to where the holes aren't and float. I just held mine while leaning over the boat until it sank. Good luck, John

On the plus side, tires IME are pretty close to neutral bouyancy once the air is gone, so it doesn't take a lot of weight to hold them down and in place once they are flooded.

We put fist-sized rocks in the bottom of a tractor tire to make it stay put. Of course, we were doing this on dry ground before the water level rose. That method wouldn't work so well from a john boat.

The holes sound like a great idea. Not only will they make the tires sink...they will give you several good places to tie them together.
