My Levee is nearly complete and I can provide pictures in a day or two. I have maybe 30 acres watershed with three springs as well. ~ 5-7 acres. max depth 30 feet. Need info on where to buy, when to stock, what to stock. I wanted Black Crappie, HBG or, CC, LMB, any suggestions are welcome. Just found this site a couple of days ago and am a tad overwhelmed.

If you are going to stock largemouth everybody will tell you not to stock crappie. They compete with the bass for forage and eat the fingerling bass.

If you want to concentrate on predators, you will be better off with the forage producing reproductive potential of non-hybrid BG (Coppernose or regular flavored). Especially, I would say, in a 5-7 acre pond.

Relax, take a deep breath, and feel less overwhelmed. Decide on your forage species strategy - BG, CNBG, RES, minnows, and/or shiners - they go in first. Then you can add your Bass, later this year. Crappies - we're working on how best to handle those. Slymer gave the best existing answer, "Don't mess with them," but are a number of Crappie fans searching for a better answer.

The great folks here can provide the information and references you need to get it all figured out.

Cajan Man. I got an email from you today then saw your post here as well. Once you've caught some water it would be a good idea to test for pH, alkalinity, and hardness. We'd like to see a pH value of 6.5-9 and alkalinity/hardness concentrations of more than 40 ppm. These tests help determine if your pond will need lime to boost natural productivity and fry survival rates. However, if the pond is actively flowing in and out due to the spring then you might not be able to make water quality improvements with lime.

There is a lot more to be researched before you decide what to stock. This forum is a good place to do that.

I am intent on adding a number of mayhaw trees very close and have been planning parts of this project for ten years... It just suddenly came together. I read AMAP here and suspect I will learn a lot in the next few days unless the upcoming 2000 wildblue satellite installations overwhelm me (smile).. ooops duty calls
