sign me up for 20 LBS. I bet it would be realy cool to watch a school of those minnows swim around the pond at night. Although, it would probably only be cool for one night because I'm pretty sure the LMB would pick them off verry quickly. I would bet on them living about a week since I have good shallow cover and not many predatory birds. by the end of the week the native fish would have had an interesting snack.
That's a pretty funny video. The interviewer asks a crazy question. "What if these fish get out?" Well, if they get out they will be eaten quickly. If they don't get eaten quickly they will only be able to mate with other fish in the same species. There is no way that the glowing fish genes could make the jump or jumps from minnows to sharks.

Interesting thing is we are not sure what light wave lengths different fish species see. There are some glowing fish in the sea. There is some thought that at least some predator fish may see in both the regular light spectrum and in ultra violate and/or infra-red spectrums.

Jeez it's a good thing that they don't have a shot or something to introduce this "glowing" gene into humans. I'd be willing to bet the JWHAP would inject me with it so I'd be easier to find when I "escape into the world."

Don't give her any ideas JHAP! Then again, she may enjoy your excursions into the world. I know my wife usually seems much more relaxed when I come back then when I left.

I have done some more research, they are Zebra fish, and their offspring will also glow. To get the best glow off of them use a blacklight. Ewest good point, I didnt think about the different wavelengths, or even that a fish could be colorblind. Jeff, they can make just about any animal glow under a blacklight (including humans ). They have done it with mice, frogs, cats, to name a few....
Get out and fish.

The interviewer obviously wasn't very knowledgeable in regard to biology, and it cracks me up that often the most passionate environmentalists have so little grasp of the subject.
However, the valid question with regard to GM animals is "what happens when GM animals end up mixing their genes with their wild counterparts?"
Ultimately they will, and we have no definite answer as to what will happen, except that it will be permanent.

Very cool fish for an aquarium. I'm going to look into getting some.
B'ski, your comment will change the old saying from "the barn door's open" to "the lights on in the barn". Or at the risk of moderation........Glow me!

Just priced them at Petco for $6.99 each. Other stores ranged from $10-$12.

I thought I read somewhere that they were originally modified to be used as a water quality test. They would glow in the presence of toxins. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3398427.stm
Weird.

Did anyone see the movie "The Bar Fly?"

Was that the one with Vincent Price as the mad scientist who had an accident?

Yes, IIRC it was about a very strong, handsome young lad from PA that went around to local drinking establishments making a pest of himself.

Well, maybe you're right, but I thought I was talking about the movie with the late, great John Ritter (sp?).
Maybe the title was wrong, but I think it was The Bar Fly.
