Sounds like some of the problems that have been posted on this forum .. on a much smaller scale. During the end of the Permian era 250 million years ago, global warming ran rampant on Earth, extinguishing 95 percent of life in the ocean, and 70 percent of life on land.
Through the darkest days, the planet was a barren wasteland. Ocean circulation, so vital to our modern climate, had shut off. Huge algal blooms sucked the seas dry of oxygen. Poisonous hydrogen sulfide built up to lethal concentrations in the water and may have even been belched into the atmosphere, suffocating organisms on shore. .......
Beatty thinks wave action and storms near the shore aerated the waters, mixing life-giving oxygen into the first 50 meters (160 feet) of ocean.

Uh oh not global warming again. 
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Every time I see the ocean, it makes me feel puny both physically and mentally. I suppose a cloudy day or sunny day affecting ocean algal bloom can have more effect on atmosperic gasses than puny men could have in a year.

What amazes me is considering how big it is how much effect we have on it as in overfishing (commerical trawlers). But if you've ever seen the size of some of those nets!  What's sad is how we use our oceans as a sewage and debris receptacle. Some places more than others.
