I there any problem with stocking a 2 acre pond with mosquito fish? I heard that some have raised concerns over the use of these fish to control mosquito's, but have no info as to why.

I didn't stock mine but they arrived naturally when I was filling it from the drainage ditch in front of the house. I can now walk around the banks and see them swimming around. They don't provide much forage but I have seen the fish attack them almost jumping on the bank as they are normally real close to the edge. As far as mosquitos they must do the job as the dock is the safest place to sit on a summers eve.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. Any concerns that you have heard of?

Misquitos don't coexsist with fish. They would much rather lay eggs in an old tire, a half full tin can or a bird bath.

Seems I remember Bill C stating that they are fish egg eaters.

Very small fry get eaten as well...I consider them beneficial along with shiners, I'm a crappie lover and welcome them into my pond for any pressure they may apply to the early Spring spawn.

Kevin K...Nebraskaland magazine ran a fairly extensive article about all of the problems with misquito fish in northern waters. Contact them for the article. The bottom line was to avoid them like the plague in northern waters. People in southern areas might have very different experiences but you're not in the south.
