When i first started filling my pond 2 1/2years ago i was surprised when 2 small islands popped-up after a couple weeks. The pond was formed by damming a gully at both ends. The gully was usually wet especially at the upper end where the islands came up. The small islands are held in place by the roots of the trees that used to be there, and there's about 4 ft. of water under them. The cattails, and weeds grew on their own, but i planted Pickerel weed. It's amazing to see all the wildlife attracted to the islands, birds, frogs, ducks, bugs, and a young otter the first year(luckily he didn't come back). The small golden shiners, and pumpkinseeds hang around the island shallows, and probably the trout under them. If i wasn't lucky enough to have these islands naturally, it sure would be worth putting in some artificial islands like the homemade, and manufactured ones written about here on Pond Boss.

Beautiful photos. I find the idea of islands on a pond interesting. The only problem that I see with the manufactured ones is cost - for a decent sized island they get expensive in a hurry.

JHAP, I'm not sure if you saw it, but there's a good discussion, and info on making floating islands under (Aquatic vegetation, balance of plants in the environment) the subject was floating island, date 10-18-06. Sorry for not putting the link here, i wasn't sure i would do it right. ( it took me a long time just to figure-out how to post a picture.)

AP, very beautiful pond. How's the fishing been during this relatively cool summer?

Thank you Mason, fishing in the pond has been easy, the trout haven't been hitting the pantyhose flies as good as worms, but for now I throw everything back. When I put the Rt in they didn't hit the feed much, and a few weeks later I put in some Tiger trout, and then immediately threw in some feed, they ate it quickly, but by the second day they weren't eating much feed either. I can only figure that because there are so many shiners and bugs, that it's what they prefer. The rt,and tiger's have grown 4 inches in less than 4 months, so I guess they're getting enough food. Do you take out many of the trout, and did you decide on HSB?
