Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations red spots on BG

This is my first post. Have monitored for several years. In the last few months I have noticed red spots on the BG. Mainly on the big ones. This morning I cought one about half pound and it has a large bloody spot on its lower side. I have a one acre pond I have built about 12' in the middle and I use a aireator in it. I also use this pond for my geothermal heating and cooling for my house. Pond is about 3 1/2 years old. Stocked about 3 years ago. Not sure what other info needed to assist in solving my problem thanls

ED D welcome to posting. Can you post a pic of the problem? It is not unusual for BG or LMB to have red spots especially after the spawn. In MO the BG spawn can last all summer.

I'd like to hear more about the geothermal heating and cooling system. Perhaps you could start a new thread and tell us about it. (type of system, whether or not you are happy with it, etc).

Nice looking hybrid bluegill minus the red sores... You say you see them red spots mostly on larger fish?

Not always I had this problem last year and know it is back. It is mostly on the mid to larger sizes. I did notice it on some of the channel cat last year but not this year

If the fish are in otherwise good condition then it is probably spawn related due to contact with the pond bottom (rock , sticks hard clay). I see those same type red spots on post spawn BG mostly on the tail and fins and lower body. Can't be sure from the pics though.

Ditto to what Eric said. Procreation can be a rough contact sport in the wild. That same fish if in good health will look fine in a month.

It's most likely a ubiquitous (always present in the water) bacterium that attacks the fish in a weaken state.

my bg have some of the same looking places, especially like the places on the tail of the bg in picture. the seem to protrude a little. i figure it is some kinda parasite. my pond is 1 yr old now.

Parasites can get a foothold in weakend fish too.
