Has anyone in south Texas been able to overwinter Tiliapia? I am a little south of San Antonio area?

I spent the last several minutes searching on Tilapia trying to find an answer to this. I finally gave up (OK, I freely admit that I have a short attention span). So I close the search engine and find that this thread has been responded to by Ewest.

Wouldn't you know that he finds the perfect link.

He's the "Lord of the Links" I'm telling ya. \:D

The closest that I know of is in Halletsville and then there is someone in Corpus selling them.

I haven't had that problem. I did have a huge die off a couple of years ago where I had thousand wash ashore. That was a stinky mess but did kick the population back. I currently have so many bass that they are doing a very good job of keeping them in check. I have even created a couple of forage ponds to breed and grow them out. See my other post.

Did you notice any effect on the cnbg or bg population with the added tilapia? Were you able to keep more bass due to the added forage base? Was the die off due to cold weather? How many did you stock per acre? Great post on the Tilapia grow out project..thanks for info..

I actually saw an increase in other bait fish because it took the pressure off them. I had and still kinda have an bass overpopulation but there was a .75lb average increase in weights in a year. The die off was due to a very cold spell we had for about three days. I only stocked 100 in my pond.

Posted more pics on the project.
