this is in reference to the Fry (Fish) Kill thread. Why does sudden rain cause a DO crash? Shouldn't rain be fairly saturated with oxygen since it has so much surface area? I can understand the rain being more dense than the warmer water in the pond and therefore sinking and displacing the warmer oxygenated water but I don't understand how adding oxygenated water can cause a DO crash.

Thanks

IF the cold bottom water is oxygen deficient, cold rain (even though O2 saturated) can cool off the warm surface water and cause it to mix with the dead bottom water, making the average O2 level in the now-homogenized pond too low for fish.

So if you aerate, would it be safe to say that your diffuser should be turned on prior to or during any rain activity of significance? Would this buffer the danger to some extent?
