Since the The Pond Barge Saga thread has so many photos and takes a long time to load on a slower Internet connection, I decided to start a follow-up thread. You can still always return to The Pond Barge Saga. This is the ladder I built for the Barge for in-water activities. The paint is still drying. I imagine that ewest will notice that Furhead (of wheel chock fame) is in the background next to the electrical transformer box. So, here is a close-up of the pressure that the teat-mongers put on ole Furhead...

Is there a special term for those half-tone calicos (middle kitten)? Our second barn cat is one of them.
P.S. Nice work on the ladder, Dwight, as we have come to expect.

Dwight you made my day - the return of Furhead Wheelchock. Not surprised she was back by the electrical transformer box - she always did charge things up.
Never saw a half-tone before. Notice FHWC (mom) has 3 colors. I have been told that if a calico has 3 colors it is female if less then a male. Anyone confirm that ?

All I know is that a true Calico is female.
I don't know on the variations. We don't have many males survive out here. The predominant male either snuffs them when they are small or drives them off if they survive. Actually the predominant male is the only male most of the time.

According to the cat experts in my family (wife and daughter), male calicos are possible but very rare, and they are always sterile.
I tried figuring out cat coloration genetics once, but it made fish look simple. There are like 7 different genetic ways for an all white cat to be all white. An all white cat can actually be a calico, but all of the colors are white.
Eric, I have known of 3 half-tone calicos in the last 2 years. Two were related (momma and daughter).

i've heard from a couple different vets that if a cat (any cat)has more than two colors it is female. females can also have one or two colors but males have ONLY one or two colors. if the vet said its true, its got to be.....right? nice manufacturing on that ladder dwight, you got some skills...

Gail and I mowed the yard late today. It was hot, dry, and dusty, but we got it done. I was stung in both shoulders by those HORNETS that live in a small hole where you just happen to be standing. We were ready for a swim, so I hauled the new ladder down to the Barge and set it in position. (as I was bleeding profusely from both shoulders). I went to the shop to get the cooler with a few nipsters while Gail got the towels and etc. The swim was excellent, cooling us off and stopping the profuse bleeding from my shoulders. I tried to get a photo of Gail climbing up the ladder out of the pond, but she is a shy girl. This photo (the Barge docked) is not very good as the sun was setting behind and there are a lot of reflections.

About the cats.
The half-tone is called a "dilute". We have a dilute Norwegian Forest cat. Orange cats are male. White cats have a tendency to be deaf. I have plenty of milfoil if your looking for weed!
I subscribe!

I am also a lucky guy. Ever since I killed my Elodea I have now created lots of clear areas for American Pondweed to take hold.
Great photos Dwight. I like the new crop of FHWC.

Jeff, There are two others, one a calico and one black. They weren't in the photo because they were sleeping in one of the two holes in a concrete block.
The Pondweed doesn't seem to over run here. I imagine the long cold winter kills it back so far that it needs half the summer to get re-established.

Dave, You have a standing invitation. I would be proud to have you fish on Bremer Pond! You can even drive the Barge if you want....

Well, OF COURSE, I need to drive the barge. However, I'll hand the captain duties to you as you slip me into those prime structure locations, ok??
