If you go online, you can find liner material that's really, really good quality for about 0.41/sf. It's called EPDM and it's made by Firestone. Then you have to pay delivery based on your location, then you have to install and possibly seam the material.
As you can already tell, this could really add up!
1/2 acre pond takes a lot more than 1/2 acre of liner, since you have to include slopes, angles and irregularities, and the bank. I think that you could count on needing about 30,000 square feet of material. That's 12 grand, plus installation.

How much do you think it would cost to fix this? By not adding a liner. I guess putting new clay down. The owners said that when that guy re did it he just sprinkled new dirt down.

Generally, sprinkling new dirt isn't going to have any impact on a leak. The usual recipe is 24 inches of well packed clay. Have you identified the source of the leak?
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
