I noticed the first evidence of frog eggs this weekend and actually saw the first tadpoles. It was 79 F for a high today, and I saw several clumps of frog eggs in the shallow water. I also noticed that I actually had at least one tilapia that has over wintered so far.
At this rate, I expect early spawn of the BG, so I guess I will start the feeder back this week.

Hmmm, it was high of 30 here today. I'm envious, Mike!

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

We're turning the corner here, switching seasons from frozen to unfrozen mud.

Temps have been upgraded to mid 80's for today. It's 70 now. Cold front coming in tonight that will lower the hi tomorrow to mid 60's (couldn't resist). Yeah, I know. August is coming.

I was just gong to say it's early enough even in Texas for things to change. It also goes to show you animals don't have inside information on the weather as those eggs are probably doomed if the temps drop enough. I used to chuckle when I used to do deer mounts and people would say, "Wow that deer has a lot of fat on it's hide. It's going to be a loooooog cold winter!" Which I would reply, "Sure it doesn't have to do with food supply like the fact that the mast crop is really good this year?"
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

My pond is crystal clear. Yesterday my brother was down for a visit. We went out on the deck and BG's were hanging about 18 to 24 inches under the surface. It was 72 dgrees I thank. I decided to see if they would eat. I thru in a hand full of feed and it started floating away. Not one of the fish came up for the food but they all started following the food at their same level as it drifted away toward the middle of the pond. I guess awaiting it to sink to their level.

hi mike, i saw something last week that blew me away....it was in the low 30's, rain, freezing rain, snow, hail....30 mph winds.....all week was raw and cold especially for here.....and every evening after sun went down, my pond had thousands upon thousands of pacific tree frogs croaking away and spawning like it was springtime...the sound has been deafening if you stand by the pond...they are the toughest little critters i think i've ever seen....i dont know what it means in terms of early or late spawn for fish, but i cant recall in my 11+ years of living here i've ever seen them out and so active when its this cold. pacific tree frog:

Dave, I have a confession to make. Made a visit to your pond. It appears the plastic replica frogs and the sound system is doing it's job. And it's not even April Fool's day yet!

Got into the low 80s yesterday and this morning its 72.Took my coffee out on the dock and threw in some food.I saw the little BG perch and other sunfish coming up and nibbling. And then, drum roll please,I started seeing the little CC coming up for a snack. Then I see the 3,4&5lb cats browsing for breakfast.A large splash close to the bank as a bass ambushes unsuspecting prey!Life is good at Toms. The fish are back, they have survived another winter.I love mornings at the pond Another nice day forcast,a bit windy but warm.Tonites forcast..... . . . . . . . . . 28-30 nature stinks, just like her to tease me a little then slam me back down into the throws of misery Well its only Feb,guess Ill be better next month when it hits 137

I like the Pacific Tree Frog. It's the dreaded El Dorado Vampire Frog that bothers me....
