I have a 1 3/4 acre pond that currently has black crappie. I'm curious if introducing hybrid crappie into pond would cause them to hybridize with the existing black crappie and reduce the BCP reproduction rate. Is this a possibility?

I work with HBCP often and can shed some light on this question. Yes you could do this, but the F2 etc. generations will be inferior fish and not desirable - its not worth tying up biomass/carrying capacity with these fish. If you're having management issues with CP populations you need to consider stocking apex predators capable of managing the populations and also employ collection efforts via angling, trapping, seining, cast nets, etc. You can manage BCP in a small pond, but it's a multi faceted approach.

Pond is about 1 3/4 acre - 14' deep at dam side - most water 6' and less is covered by watershield making fishing from shore difficult. Also makes it difficult to target bass as they seem to be stalking bluegills under the weeds. There are a few spots not covered by weeds that I have caught the big fish at using texas rigged worms in about 6'-8' deep water.

Pond has a lot of BCP in the 7"-10" range with most being around 8". Since I purchased property in late March I've taken out over 125 of them.

White perch were bucket stocked at some point and I've caught 3 total - all of nice 10" size and fat.

Bluegills seemed to be rather low in number so I've stocked 300 fingerlings and 275 intermediate sized ones since buying property. They seem to be spawning well as I see recent fry and smaller BG hiding in grass of late

I'd estimate there are between 20-50 bass in pond. Most are small and under 13" long but I've caught a 5-6 lb+ fish a couple times (maybe the same fish) and caught a nice 4lb+ fish this week.

My take is that the BCP have been impacting the bass and BG spawn over the years to the point their numbers are low. The lack of forage in shallow water for bass lead the remaining bass to be slow growing with only a few able to get big enough to eat crappie/perch but once they do that they can get to decent size.

My plan to manage is to remove as many crappie as possible and improve the BG/Bass fishery. Started hand feeding the BG this summer and between that and the stocking it is improving. I was floating the idea about hybrid crappie as they are supposedly easier to manage in small bodies of water.

I will probably hold off stocking anymore BG this year unless I can get some more intermediate sized ones. Next spring I would like to add some more BG and possibly a couple dozen bass fingerlings - maybe F1 type if I can find some.
