I have been noticing over the past week or so some dead fish around the pond. At first it was some BG and then a few bass started showing up. Never before have I had fish floating like this and I am not sure what might have happened to cause this. At most I usually only see a few dead fish each year and I was never concerned. I did see some BG that looked like they had big white lips but I don't think I seen any LMB that looked like that. Could there be some kind of disease that's going on? There is probably 60 dead fish mostly BG and a hand full of bass and it's on a 6 acre pond.

Sounds like spawning mortality to me. Are the bluegills mostly males -- if you can tell in their morbid state? Are they larger older fish? The combination of spawning stress and age may have conspired to produce your fish kill.

If so, it will pass. Actually most events like this will.

60 fish in a 6 acre lake is enough to cause concern but not especially high considering how many fish you probably have.

All the BG are about hand size and the LMB are generally 2# but I saw one LMB that could of went around 3.5#. We have never had fish die like this so it just seems weird to me. I sort of assumed it had to do with the spawn. I think my pond is at the tail end of the spawn here in NE Ohio. That super moon is what started it off as far as I could tell. As for that white lip thing that was on BG that were still alive swimming around. I don't know if that is like a clue or what but they looked really weird.

Do you have a pic ? That huge moon was the height of the spawn in some places. Here is the archive to fish kills and diseases
