Is there a way of finding out what type of forage lives where? I'm wanting to add lots of forage if possible (budget). I know wht I can get off the fish truck here (fhm). Just would like to know what can live in my area. If someone has maybe some kind of zone chart for forage. My backyard is already covered in crawdads. I know it has them in there already.

I think some research of different species and their range/distribution will reveal what may or may not work.
One species that is native to your area that may be a candidate is spotfin shiner. They are present in the Spring and Neosho river and tributaries of, in your area.
My vote on Red shiner is still on hold as I'm having a hard time figuring how something that lives under less than desirable conditions is not more popular amongst fish growers. There are tons of darter species in your area that do well but the question remains of how well they survive under the strain of predation mixed in with other variables.
I'm beginning to think it might be easier to just build a forage pond to raise high numbers of what we know will work, simply put, pounds and pounds of fhm.
I think in the right conditions, PK shrimp will survive and prosper just as crawdads will. Both have benefit, and I believe diversity is the key. Having an environment that supports those critters we don't give much credit to, dragonflies, mayflies, aquatic insects of all sorts, with frogs, snakes, etc..
Maybe building the habitat up to help support what naturally occurs might be best. Speculation on my part but it has to be an important part of this puzzle.

We have alot of those little 2 feet and less northern water snakes here. It seems like I have heard someone talking about use muddogs or mud puppies before. Are those a good or bad idea in a small pond. I'm not really feeling another pond either. Never thought about the shrimp. Have to check them out.

I stocked 1k PK shrimp a while back. They need significant pond weeds for cover, as they are slow and easily picked off in open water. However, PK put detritus to good use and are a real benefit for panfish that are not on a feeding program.

I have my RES/SMB pond over run with bushy pondweed last year. It would have been an ideal environment to have introduced some PK shrimp with all the cover. Wish PK shrimp were more readily available at a reasonable cost.

Put in 4 grass carp last fall to try and get a jump on the pondweed this coming spring so time will tell if the environment changes. But I sure could have used some crayfish or PK shrimp or something to turn some of the weed pressure into protein fish food.

A little bit afraid of the crayfish. I have heard in too high numbers they can go the opposite direction, eat all the plant material, and turn the pond turbid. I do not want to go from one extreme to the other.

All my other ponds have been exceptionally slow to establish ANY kind of natural weed cover (other than spatterdock in my old pond). But for some reason the last two years in this relatively newish pond the bushy pond weed just went nuts.

Snrub would you be interested I'm selling some of that pond weed? I have zero vegetation right now due to the redig.

You would probably be better off getting a different variety of pondweed though.

Waterfowl = Ducks

Waterfoul = Cormorants

Others may have them but I believe I would talk to TJ about obtaining some PK's snrub.

Good idea. I've been to TJ's before. He let me catch one of his monster HSB and the wife caught a huge SMB there.
