Hello All,
I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a farmer in north eastern Iowa looking to get some info on my pond dreams/plans. I'm hoping to build 3-5 ponds on the land and it isn't what I typically think of normal good pond land. It's all up and down and sand and rocks, precious little clay. I'm also interested in a large variety of fish, including some that many would call 'trash' fish. I enjoy the diversity. Don't be surprised if I ask some weird or off the wall questions, that's just the way I am.

Welcome, IAFarmer! Weird and off the wall questions & answers are definitely a part of the Forum. As for trash fish, I can recall a time when catfish were considered trash, crawfish were considered trash, and redfish were considered trash. Who knows what the future may bring?

"catfish were considered trash, crawfish were considered trash, and redfish were considered trash"

Must have been rough times in Cajun country. I always remember those as delicacies.

I had southern roots, but lived mostly up north in my formative years. Definitely enjoyed crawfish and catfish when visiting relatives in Baton Rouge, but people in the Midwest and Northeast looked down on it. How things have changed!

I guess I experienced the reverse. I grew up in the south but had northern roots and wound up in the midwest. I desperately miss the boudain, but thank the lord for relief from the mosquitoes. wink

Welcome to the forum. Be prepared to think about using a liner for the pond, or a sealing product to mix with the soil in the part of the pond that is below the water line after you have removed all the rocks - think of a screener if there are a lot of rocks. Not too sure yet on the sealing product on sand, I am running a test this Spring on using Soilfloc on sand.

Thanks! I'm southeast from Cresco, an hour or two. Not all that far as the crow flies, but the roads headed up that way are in no way flat, straight ,or headed directly anywhere fast. smile

It is a 2 part polymer that can be either spead out on top of the water or incorporated into the soil before the pond fills, and it is used to seal leaking ponds. Send teehjaeh57 a private message about it and how it works. That's where I got mine.

I'll look into that more. I didn't realize there's a 16 page discussion about it on the forum when I asked what it is. I was figuring on trucking in clay when the time comes, but this Soilfloc might be a better option.

Wow! Now that is a pretty spot! Did you build it?

it is a deep ravine creek that was dammed up in the 1970's on a shared HOA lot where I live - I took over the management 5 years ago https://forums.pondboss.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=462763
