Picking up SMB/HSB from Hartley's on Friday.
45 fish, 8"-10" size.
They'll be in my tank ~2.5hrs.
How much salt do I use in 200 gallons of water?
Pickling/canning salt good?

Bill Cody mentioned in another thread that you want to add 1 oz. of salt for every 2-3 gallons of water. So, in 200 gallons, that would be 67 oz. on the low end and 100 oz. on the high end. Pickling/canning salt is fine as long as it's not iodized and there are no additives (pure salt).

I would wait to add salt when you get to Hartley's just to verify with them what they think is a good amount. It does not hurt to get a second opinion. Let us know how the transport progressed. 8"-10" SMB are excellent size to te able to purchase and a good quality for stocking. Good luck.

Talked to Chet today. He's making a run to a couple other ponds with his truck, and will be able to meet in KC, which will save me ~6hrs round trip vs. going to his place.
My time on the road from picking up fish to home should be ~2hrs. I'm bringing my own water. He told me adding salt would be good.
It only took 150 gallons to adequately submerge my pumps. Based on Steve_'s math 50oz will be about right to hit the low end.

I'll report back with results after I get home on Friday.

Augie - if anything changes, please message me. More than likely, you will be driving right past my place off highway 54/400. I would be interested in throwing some cash your way for 5 HSB if you ended up driving all the way to Kingman, KS. I am going to blame my laziness and inability to drive said lazy butt to Kingman on chasing my daughter around the state playing volleyball. Sounds like a good story! Anyways, if you make the full trip, let me know and I would meet you up on the highway. Thanks!

Auggie, call Chet or Bill and ask them to bring enough electrolyte for 150 gallons.
They use the same compound I use and they gladly supply it to anyone buying their fish.

KW: I'd be happy to help if I was going that way. Barring disaster, this trip will be a straight shot down I-70 from my place to the speedway casino in KCK.

Snipe: I'll call Chet. Odd that he didn't mention the green stuff when I talked to him yesterday.

Hi Augie,

If you're ever putting together an order there again, please give me a heads up and maybe we could coordinate a bit. Best of luck on this run!

I'll try to remember this when it's time to restock HSB in a couple or three years.

Awesome, bro! I've been swamped trying to get work work done so I don't leave anyone hanging when I run off tomorrow and haven't had time to call him. Much appreciated!

No worries, Augie, I'll look out for the post -- thank you! Those HSB are gonna be a BLAST.

Things couldn't have gone better yesterday.

Chet and I both arrived at the rendezvous within 5 minutes of the agreed-upon time.

My tank water temp was within 2° of his.

Transferred fish, handed him cash, and we were both out of there in ~20 minutes.

My tank water temp was within 2° of my pond water temp when I got home.

Pumped the tank down, dipped em out - not easy with them on 3/4 liter/hr pure O2 for three hours - they were super frisky, and turned em loose.

There were three bonus ~4" RES and a dinker smallmouth in the tank when I got home.

That is great Augie. Was it just luck or did you guys have a plan put together so the temps would be so close?
Posted By: Augie Re: transport question - 09/26/20 06:13 PM
We had a plan.

Chet told me that his water would be ~58°, so I experimented and figured out before I left that 20lbs of ice dropped the temp in my tank by 2°.
I was at 58.5° when I got there. He had warmed up just a touch.

I knew that my pond was 67.8° when I left. It was 71.1° when I got home, and my tank was 69.5°.

It took me two hours to get there, and three to get home with the extra stops for temp checks and minor adjustments.

My shiners disagree.

Normally they are voracious when I throw pellets.

They didn't show up at all for the noon feeding today.

I told em yesterday that hell was coming, and it did. lol

There's a new sheriff in town!!!

The new smallies had a brute squad organized against the FHM this morning.

Any fathead that tried to break out of the crowd was toast.

I cut the tails on 15 or so little BG that I trapped last night and tossed them into open water.

Gone!

It doesn't take much to entertain an old fat man.
