Anyone have any experience with white perch, Morone americana in smaller ponds?

Over population issues?
Expected size?
Growth rates?
Interaction with other fish species?

I know they can really overpopulate in lakes and have made a mess of some great walleye fisheries in the Midwest... Curious if they would be better suited to smaller ponds where they may not be able to reproduce as prolifically.

Also, anyone have any experience with a white perch X striped bass hybrid?

CJ, there's a good article in Nov.-Dec. 2008 issue of Pond Boss, on White Perch by Mark Cornwell, if you haven't seen it.

I must be retarded when it comes to searching the archives. I tried every method I knew and couldn't find anything on white perch. Little did I know...

It appears there is a lot of confusion with local names between the white perch and the crappie species. Some of our lakes in my area have white perch, but the fishing is fine in them. The white perch never get much bigger than 6" though.

Apparently they are not well suited for small ponds, so my question as been answered! Thanks for the help all!

So Cj, you started your subscription with that great looking pond on the cover. ;\)
Apparently the white bass and white perch are closely related, and can interbreed.

I have resorted to using googles advanced search to find things on the Pond Boss forum. With Googles Advanced search you can search specific sites for key words, this seems to work much better for me than the forum's own search feature.

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

in the bottom field put this in

http://www.pondboss.com/forums

and then your key words in one of the two top fields.

Hope this helps.

And it is one fine looking pond at that! ;\) Yes, white perch, white bass, yellow bass and striped bass are all in the same temperate bass family and can in all cases be artificially crossed in a hatchery and in rare cases naturally hybridize...

I have caught some very nice 12" plus white perch in the Chesapeake Bay, but that is their natural habitat.

Thanks shorty, I'll keep that in mind for future Pond Boss searches...
