Ok with all this rain the fire ant mounds are the worst I have ever seen. Please let me hear from everyone what is the BEST poison for them! What is everyone using and any secret techniques of their own? I need something I can carry around in my side by side to have with me all the time. (can't tote boiling water around with me) !! I have used several granual types but mostly they just move to another spot. Can't run them to the neighbors yard. It's 25 acres away!!

I like cheap hair spray and a lighter.

I am fighting them too! So far, I like the Amdrol bait better than the drench but the drench works faster. I think the bait really kills the queen. I too have them pop up near the poisoned mound but I think in my case, it's a new infestation.

I use some type of powdered poison(pick one). Stir the nest and they come boiling out. Put a bunch of the powder on. Problem solved. I assume that they get the poison on them and take it back downstairs.

Or, stir the nest and when they come out give them a healthy dose of charcoal lighter fluid and light them up. My theory is that I kill enough to weaken them so they can't feed the queen and young.

I've had good luck with Tengard. I just mix it to label specs in a pump up sprayer, then push the wand as deep as I can in the nest and slowly pull it out with the nozzle still open. Then I soak the top of the mound itself. Thousands of dead ants almost instantly, and the ants escaping the mound die when they crawl through it. It 's not unusual for the mounds to be solid black with dead ants by the next morning. Tengard's active ingredient is Permethrin, and we use it around the foundation of the house for ants, crickets, etc..

I've heard that MALATHION, two tablespoons per gallon of water does the trick. On carpenter bees too.

FireIsHot's method of saturating around the mound then giving them a dose from deep in the mound to the surface is probably a very good approach.

My personal approach is to run over the mounds with my mower, exchanging the wear on the blades for speedily dealing with the mounds.

As in using any insecticide, you would want to refer to the label to see if that use of Malathion is an approved use.

Killing only the ants you see will never get rid of the problem.
You need to kill the colony underground. Learned this over years of trying.

A simple solution that works, although I've not yet tried on it on fire ants.
Mix baking soda and confectionery sugar together 50/50, dry. Place near the active areas.

The sugar attracts the ants, they take the concoction to their nest, unable to separate the two ingredients, the baking soda reacts in their digestive system and kills them, in their home. All of them.

journeyman, a close friend of mine told me about something like that except it also has powdered jellow in it and...he mixed some type of powered poison also. I did not know it would work WITHOUT the poison part!!

FLAME I finished treating 200 + mounds. I used Martin`s Surrender in a tin can. Heads up this stuff smells to high heavens so poke only two small holes in the lid. Light dusting across the mound and about a foot around the edge. 80% dead by the next morning. The rest dead the following day. Two years in a row this stuff has been a strong investment.
