After several weeks of afternoon thunderstorms and high temps we came in for a stretch of clear sunny weather over last several days.

I noticed on Monday (and following days this week) that my pond bluegills seemed disinterested in being fed - maybe 10% of normal activity when hand feeding.

Likewise my bluegills in a 125gal fish tank (inside) have shown little interest in food since Monday - they picked at it and left a lot uneaten.

Had anyone else noticed that high presure systems turned fish off eating? Seems odd that fish would be turned off by clear weather.

Pretty typical of bass and other predator species from my experience, at least in "natural" bodies of water, but normally only for the first day or two of post-frontal sunny weather. Seem to be more effected by it during the summer than during the spring or fall also.

Yes - I've seen how weather changes can turn fish on/off. This is my first experience in keeping bluegills and it has been illuminating to see how bad they go off their feed. The ones in my 125 gal tank will normally eat till stuffed several times a day. Likewise the pond fish usually blow up the water when I start to feed them.

There have been multiple studies done on the effect of barometric pressure on fish. The increase in pressure has a direct effect on the swim bladder and causes fish to become lethargic, and sometimes throwing off their equilibrium to the point where they will literally lie on their sides on the bottom until theyve been able to adjust to the change.

The earliest study I recall was on LMB in FL and performed by Doug Hannon, who was widely known in the tournament community as the "BASS PROFESSOR".

Like many anglers, I've had relatively poor results post cold fronts. Wonder what is the balance between change in barometric pressure, greater depth of penetration of sunlight, and change in water temps?

Fish strikes I've found are affected by fronts, clouds vs sun, the season and time of day. Even a solar eclipse can make fish go bonkers !
Location changes are key and many times mid year locations are totally different than the previous year. Weed growth variations from year to year also affect locations and sometimes fish are hard to pattern when there are no weed edges - just a bunch of weeds scattered all over the place.

I can catch fish when it's raining but let there be one lightning strike in the sky or loud thunder and it will shut the fish down for a day. And thats ok when it's going on cause I'm getting the heck off the water anyways when that happens.

I'm thinking maybe the sudden change in conditions tends to stress the fish, but haven't seen any studies on the subject.

When I used to sell live catfish at my bait camp I kept them in a LARGE metal "vat". One night with extreme THUNDER I woke the next morning to find almost all the fish (about 20) had jumped out of the vat and were flopping on the floor. I had not seen that before or since. Loud thunder in that metal vat was more than they could stand!!

I've noticed weather changes affect my fish feeding. And biting.

I have also noticed that fish biting is not only affected by weather but it also affects different ponds differently. My main fishing ponds are a 3 acre pond and two one acre ponds. They all three have completely different personalities. One pond might be biting like crazy and another one not. If I am not catching much at one I can go to another and sometimes it will be biting just fine.

If I only had a single pond I would never have noticed this.

That's one motivation I have for building another smaller BOW at my place, maybe 2 to 3 acres. Could manage & stock it differently, too. Nobody tell my wife!

You might even consider a smaller one like an acre or acre and a half.

Even my 3 acre pond would take considerable management to make it turn if one fish class gets out of hand. But I think it would be much more manageable with an acre pond.

They probably give discounts for building multiple ponds. Go for two, a one acre and a three acre.
