Don't know if anyone started a mushroom thread this year.. went out Friday before the weather disaster found one grey and one peckerhead.. my season is kinda messed up now with these 2 nights in the low 30's I'm still optimistic though for a couple weeks from now with some good warm air moving in with the damp ground we already have..
Any other pomdbossers reports out there.?
BGK we have moisture finally, and next week is 70s. In 10 days I'll make my first foray into the woods around the Platte River. Still probably a little early, but should find some greys.
So TJ, you said you wanted me out there in 3 weeks? Yellows should be popping then, right?
They are up in mid Missouri. My cousin got these a few days ago.
Well this thread led me straight to wikipedia... I'm not a huge mushroom guy, but I can eat them. Apparently they are prized little mushrooms.
Oh MAN those look good...I'm hungry for some good yellows. But I'm worried this last round of ridiculously cold weather really put a damper on them. Hoping we get a decent couple of weeks.
We will not see them until June and we only get them in areas that had a fire in the last couple of years. A few will show up without fire but not enough to bother hunting for.
I've hunted mushrooms for a lot of years, but this is by far the latest I have ever gone into the season without finding any. I'm hoping that they are just delayed, but I kind of doubt it, really.
Did find this elephant ear tonight. I left it unmolested.
You sure that's an elephant ear.. maybe I've just never seen a young one or I've just never knew what one actually was lol
PS- stay positive sprk.. give it 10 days then start too worry
BGK, I hope you find a bunch, and I get a chance to liberate some from you! My dang eyes blend browns, oranges and greens. I can be standing in a loaded patch and not see the dang things, but I never miss them on my plate!
I'm very bad color blind myself.. I've learned to hunt everything by shape/texture not color.
I'm heading out now very reliable spot first real hunt of the year I'll let you guys know what's up in my part of the state..
Wish me luck..
3 hrs no shrooms it'll be next weekend before I go back out.. woods don't even look ready around here may apples are up but very sporadic looks a little dry too need some rain and a week of 50+ degree nights.. should be good next weekend.. I'll post after next weekend when I go..
First two of the season. Hope it's not the last two also. Not impressed with how the woods looks right now.
Too dry here too. Despite the higher than normal snowfall this past winter, the past 30 days has yeilded only slightly less than 50% of the normal rainfall.
We had rain just no heat next week is suppose to be perfect conditions around here high 70's during the day 50's-60's at night and a few different days of showers and a thunderstorm at the end of the week..

T - those appear to be Greys, and fresh ones at that. Since they precede the Blondes I think you're just now hitting stride. You only need a few good humid evenings in the 50s to get going. Keep at it - headed out for my first recon mission tomorrow. We're easily 5-7 days out yet, but maybe I can get a few Greys.
Good work - those Blondes look very new/fresh. You're just about to hit it bigtime - keep the photos coming and good luck.
Looking a little better.
Nice job on the yallers', John.......
To dry here been everyday not even a sign of Greys unless it rains were screwed.. The rain we've been forecast has been very slight shower at best.. still some forecasted for the end of the week if it don't happen Idk about this season..
Got you a nice mess spark. I looked today but it was so busy with trout and crawdad boil I only found one. Got a nice sunburn even with sunscreen though.
That grey on the bottom right is one of the largest I've ever seen. Majority look very fresh too, maybe a few days old. It's amazing how fast they grow when conditions are perfect. I'd say you still have a good 5-7 days of grey hunting followed by blondes for a week or two. I'm headed out this weekend if we get some rain Thursday...it should be prime time.
Fat chance!
Going out a couple days this weekend. We've been seeing good reports and with the rain today, the hunting should be very good this weekend.
I see you guys are in for some severe storms later. The line goes all the way down past Dallas. Stay safe everyone!!
Maybe the rain will get 'em to pop in the next few days.
Nothing here, we were below freezing this morning (again).
Now I ain't jerkin anyones chain and maybe some others know of this. Years ago a fella showed me a newspaper article(pre puter days) about a couple up in Michigan that when they found fresh ones would shade them with an umbrella type cover and water them heavily twice a day. They could grow them as big as Cecils YP, seriously, 12-14"s.Yes there were pictures. (pre photo shop)
Several yrs ago I was out and hit on a bunch of big yellows, 2 lbs. My daughter had moved to Nashville several yrs before and was bummed that they couldn't find any around there. I packed them yellows up and sent em overnight UPS(costs 28 bucks). Got a call the next dat and when I said hello, I heard "hows the coolest pop in the world"? Dang if that didn't puff my skinny ol chest up.
We should thank the good Lord for every blessings we get everyday.
Fat chance!

Then at least share
Hit um hard yesterday prolly found 40 nice greys.. Made a major mistake today long story short buddy of mine had some difficulties and I told him I'd take him (not my sweet spots) and everything we find we'll split 50/50 I kinda quit counting after I had atleast 50 Greys and yellows and he was still under 10... anyways live and learn he got hooked up I've handed out to who I hand out to family and such now I have a couple nice meals left for myself.. Back on it tomorrow couple more places to check.. I think this weeks long cold front will put major brakes on this season and most likely my yellow spots won't produce this year..
Still gonna be a few weeks up here.
I never made it to the woods today.
I hope tomorrow turns out a little better.
Good luck to everyone who goes!
My and cousin found this Thursday. He likes them better than whites.
I let him keep that that one. I've had my experience with those. They are Russian roulette. Dang good eating but you might have to be near a toilet the next day. Explosive diarrhea! Never cover them in that siracha sauce. Whooo! Wee! That hurt. I'll stick with these. These where only whites we found. He ate that whole false morel for supper. They don't make him sick. Crazy!
I'll never eat one of those again.. I'm allergic to bananas and finding that out was not near as bad as eating a false morel.. explosive#!!!!!!!!!!!!! Porcelain Remover!!!!
I'm like you guys. I don't want to take the chance.
The comments on the false morels reminds me of this:
http://slightlyviral.com/beware-sugarless-gummy-bears-on-amazon-com/Ok, so I laughed.
I just read clip of an article from Mo dept of nat resources that stated eating them now won't necessarily effect you but the toxin or poison in them can build up in your body and cause long term effects..
Does anyone on here ever eat pheasant back mushrooms also called dryad saddles? I found a bunch and some small ones I'm gonna try tonight..

Let us know, and if you never log in again, that would be an indication to the rest of us
Ha I just said the same thing to a buddy of mine. .
Went three times today, ended up with around 70 total. Some from this morning's batch:
Found 49 today fried them all up with some HSB and some BG.. very good meal..!!!
Total of a little over a hundred mostly greys few yellows in last few days.. I'm done til next weekend walking sinkholes all day is rough on a guy..
Well couldn't resist after the rains last night and boy am I glad I didn't wait til next weekend..
Pics to come soon..
Nice! I need to get out and take a peek to see if any showed up where I've found them before.
Saw a couple small snake-heads but did not bother to collect them.
Ok, I'm willing to accept that I have no idea what I'm doing, but this is the 3rd year now of not finding one Morel on my property.
I have over 15 acres of wooded area, running creek (steep bank) throughout the property and every tree (live and dead) named that is supposed to be good for hunting Morels.
Is there a chance there's critters getting to them before I can? I have a slew of deer & turkey, but also coyote, bobcat, mink, muskrat, coons, opossum, etc., let alone the flying critters as well.
I'm seeing your pictures of these beautiful Morels getting posted and making me realize I just need to accept defeat!
But I won't!
They gotta be there don't they?
I don't know the time line for Nebraska but they might not even be up.. ask Tj this year's time line seems a little off to me little later than normal..
Animals won't get them all.. 15 acres might simply not have any between my 3-4 places were talking close to 3000 total acres not all wooded acres but prolly close to half is and I hunt hard sometimes 6+ hours a day up and down sinkholes and hills the hole time..If I average 2-3 hr I'm usually pretty happy..
I ended up with 22 today
Made a high speed on my lunch today.. Found 22 around one tree and would have loved to have left them for a couple of days but they would have been gone..
On another note, they were full of springtails or another small bug.. And looking at other pics in this thread so are others..
Best pic I could get of them.. This is after soaking and rinsing several times.. Just protein I guess but some people don't think they need the extra.. LOL
Good find, well done! Try saltwater...helps kill the critters and makes them easier to wash out. I try not to think about it much - but realize whenever I prepare and enjoy morels there's plenty of hitchhikers!
I used to soak mine in saltwater, but started to wonder if the salt would kill the spores. I always dumped the water I soaked them in outside, in the hope that I might find morels growing there sometime in the future?
You're the mushroom expert TJ, is it possible to transfer spores in the washwater??
I use mesh bags so while I walk I hope the spores are dispersing themselves. Unless I get REALLY buggy shrooms nowadays I simply half them, run under cold water for 5-10 seconds, dry about 25% moisture in dehydrator [1 hr], then vacuum seal in freezer bags and store up to several years. I've learned not to look too hard for critters and never let the wife help me or she'd likely never enjoy them again.
So, yes Tony I think you're right, some spores make it back home and would be in the water. I have read volumes on Morels, and several expert scientists seem to disagree on conditions necessary for propagation...it's one of the wonderful things about Morels, they are mysterious and all our efforts to control or predict them have largely failed. Adds to the intrigue!
FYI, only went out for 30 minutes Monday, nothing yet. I'm checking my hot spot on Friday and should have some action. Next week it will be on I'm hopeful.
I haven't found anything close to a "shroom"... But I've found about a dozen #*%#@ ticks on me so far
.
I've been using a mesh bag for a couple years.. don't really like them for all day hunts seem to dry out the shrooms pretty quickly.. and I've found shrooms before with so many bugs they literally coat the water I soak them in saltwater and 1/2ing them seems to work good..
I know an old man that's mushroom hunted for almost 60 yrs and for the last 40 he has picked the whole mushroom including the root clump, when he gets home he cuts the root clump off all them and throws them along a tree line in his backyard and every year he pulls a nice mess off that tree line.. I'm convinced it's the cuttings because there ain't much more going for them on that tree line.. pretty neat trick I'm thinking about starting..
I'm calling it quits as of today. Our woods is finished, or very nearly so. Ended up with around 300 very nice yellows. Best year for me in quite some time.
Do you see them appearing about the same time as the lilacs flower? Or at a different time?
Jack-in-the-pulpits, Dutchman's Breeches, Bleeding Hearts, and Spring Beauties are the indicators I look for.
My Grandad swore that there was no point in looking until the oak leaves were the size of a squirrel's ear....
Squirrels ears is one if heard since a kid.. I go by a lilac bush I have in my front landscape
Lilacs are probably a week away (maybe by the weekend with weather in the 80's late this coming week) from blooming here.
Hit it for 6 hours yesterday - pretty disappointed with only 22. It's been very dry for 10 days here, and last week was very cold. Yesterday popped up to 97 degrees, I think it was a record. I hope we'll have one last push for large blondes...received a good 1/2-1" rain last night should be enough. Will hit it hard Friday and keep in touch.

Such a difference between southern vs. northern Indiana.
We figured it was about over around here, then found a big yellow by the farm pond we were fishing (not ours), so we decided to check a couple spots. We found 5 pounds in an hour. Pretty easy to rack up the pounds with morels like these...
Thanks misskiwi....I am drooling now! Great find and no need for the Condello picture pose!
I'm jealous!
I can't seem to find 'em but have no problems finding Maitake (hen-of-the-woods) mushrooms in the fall.
John Wann, great pic
.
That one might be a little tough..... Great pic!
Anyone who has not had one of these needs to have one these are my new favorites I'll take these over morels anytime especially when I find just 1 that's 20 lbs
Yes this is a white chicken the better of the 2 the other being the yellow chicken yellow grows directly out of wood while the white grows out of the roots a few feet from the tree very tasty actually have to say it might be better than actual chicken
My brother said he did pretty decent with the Morels this year. They have been spreading.
I did rip out a bunch of stuff from the woods a couple years ago, which was pretty dense and you could not even walk thru it.
I of course left the much larger trees, but cleaned out a lot of the thick stuff.
He said they are in the area's I messed with, but not much further into the woods (Forrest) It can get thick, pretty quick! Maybe just have to open it up a bit more.
