Dwight, how'd the surgery go?
Posted By: Dave Willis Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 12/22/11 02:07 PM
Doesn't a bike require two feet?
Posted By: Dwight Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 12/22/11 02:41 PM
Surgery went well. Bike requires two feet and one hand for keyboarding.

I'm surprised you haven't hooked up a generator to the pedals to power the computer. You're wasting all that centrifical motion!

He sold his Tequila OP. to someone in Europe for a chunk of change.

Was watching a bunch of Sammy Hagar stuff on youtube this past weekend.

The vast majority sucked because they were posted by people who used cell phones or something to record while at a concert. They should ban that poor quality type of stuff!!! Waste of time.

I actually am, Thanks!, except for the dentist visit this afternoon. Still can't talk that well, but my fingers work.

Funny how, when you are all numbed up and get an itch, and can't itch it! Drive's me crazy!!!

When will the streak end? Today being Sunday and given sleeping in until 7:30, doubt entered my mind. Maybe I should take one day off.... guilt set in. There then was no doubt that the streak continues.

Dwight, it supposedly takes 21 days in a row of doing something for it to become a habit.....
Posted By: Dwight Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 01/19/12 01:24 PM
Geek Freak milestone day.....

30 days in a row doing an hour of aerobics each day.
32 days after my right hand surgery.
Added the weight bench and Bowflex today with 40 rapid reps per exersize with light (for me) weights. I do wear the brace on my right hand.

My right hand is a week or so ahead (in physical therapy terms) of where the left one was after the same period of time. I wouldn't have started the weights and Bowflex if there was any pain.

Given that your biological age actually is 31, I expected the faster-than-normal recovery. Rock stars such as Sunil have a much older biological age.

Yesterday, I told TJ that business owners reach geezerhood faster than regular people. That may apply to rock stars too. wink

I think it would be nice if you played the guitar and sang "Where Have all the Flowers Gone" at the up-coming Pond Boss Conference banquet.

I was thinking the same but more like "Bad Company" or "All Along the Watch Tower"

Still at it 5 days a week.

Upped Bowflex and bench weights by 33% today. Harder work, but no problem.

Have dropped 30 pounds now.

I decided that 6 pac abs aren't for me; going for the one big ab, smooth but hairy look.

Sunil, are you working out?

Yes, I'm back on my work out routine. My last work out (prior to resuming) was in Buenos Aires in the hotel gym the first day I was there. The second day, they closed the gym for renovation. Oh well.

I have two days in now....last Saturday, and this past Monday. Tomorrow morning is my next scheduled work out.

Going to the Grand Cayman next Thursday, so I have to make sure my beer-drinking stamina is in top form.

Yes, Zeke is still playing ball on the stairs. He has developed the "game" a little in that he can now play by himself when no one will toss the ball for him. He bats the ball around with his front paws until it goes down the stairs. He then chases it down and brings it back up the stairs and repeats the cycle.

Sometimes in the middle of the night I think I hear thunder. It is Zeke playing ball... grin

The costs of the trip needed to check the off-shore accounts is at least deductible, unless they are "tax-free accounts". That means plenty of beer-money, one way or the other.

Dangit, Dwight! JHAP may be asleep at the wheel, but I am not! Do you realize we had gone better than six months without a deliberate mention of, well, THAT word???!!! It's sure to draw him out now and we'll have to see that picture of the guy "noodling" the giant polliwog again. Dangit. Using that word is like catnip for CPA's - he'll go mental!

Shesh, I have other hobbies besides collecting and modeling BCNCPs. I also collect and refurbish 10 key adding machines and collect CPA trading cards. In fact I have a 1966 mint condition, un-circulated Arthur Edward Anderson MVA card (Most Valuable Accountant) - that card has got to be worth eight or nine dollars minimum.

Unfortnately I am not able to locate that photo. Anyone who has a copy of the photo please email it to me. Seriously. No really I'm being serious here. Really.

I was at a BCNCP convention in New Orleans, which on the surface sounds like it contradicts my answer above but the convention only comes around every three years and a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. BTW the latest trend is water proof LED lighting enhancements for BCNCP - it's all the rage in Rio.

Give me a break. This is outrageous slander, half truths, innuendo and a blatant disregard for common decency.

It's much safer than putting down CPAs, Sunil. Doing that would expose all of us to the risk of photos and posts that would have life-shortening effects which would skew actuarial tables all over the place. The insurance industry would never be the same!

That's true. The primary difference between a computer and an actuary is that a computer has a better personality.

Diet Tip: Never eat meatloaf at a restaurant or buy the frozen dinner grey stuff.

I "try" to stay away from the carbs. At least, some of them. I prefer a baked sweet potato and green beans.

My biggest craving is Snickers, peanuts and any kind of chocolate. I had no problem getting off the poison they call soft drinks.

I just read through this whole thread - congratz on your achievement!

If you don't mind my asking what was your starting stats (ht/wt/bp) and where are you now?

I got cleared by my doc to start aerobics now that BP problem is under control for 6 mos after having a stroke and realizing that my BP was seriously high.

I'm 6'2" 265, looking for 225 by year end.

Here where I live, basements are not viable, so my aerobics will be confined to a treadmill in the closet when it's bad weather, or outdoors.

I am 6'3", large boned, fairly heavily muscled and have been in and out of physical fitness regimes since my early 40s. When I was in my 40s I jogged 4 miles 3-4 days per week while smoking 2-3 packs of cigarettes a day. I quit smoking in my mid-40s and haven’t had one since. Let's just say that was a long time ago.

I have always had a weight (and not the losing kind) problem. My biggest weight was 295. I am currently in the 240s. I am trying to get to 220, but I have seemingly been trying to get there forever.
My current numbers (blood pressure and resting heart rate) are 100s/60s, high 60s - low 70s on the bpm.

It has been a while, but my blood pressure at one time was 140/90 area and resting heart rate in the 80s.

Keep at it Dwight. I have been tread climbing (like cross country skiing) and stair climbing (real and machine) all winter. Trying to get rid of the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year add on. Not there yet but making slow progress. My key - eat less as it takes a long time on the machine to get rid of just a few bites of good food.

Restricting the list to ten titles, and just one tune per artist, these are my favorite workout songs to get you going.

"I Fought The Law" The Clash
"Goin' Up The Country" Canned Heat
"Wild One" Billy Idol
"I Wanna Be Sedated" Ramones
"Motherless Child" Eric Clapton
"For Whom The Bell Tolls" Metallica
"Immigrant Song" Led Zeppelin
"Sweet Home Chicago" Blues Brothers
"Tonight She Comes" The Cars
"Rave On" Buddy Holly
Posted By: Dwight Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 03/25/13 12:36 PM
I thought about this top ten post for a few days.

I spent some time over the years trying to limit the number of tunes on my workout list. It was down to 108 at one point put creep has set in and that number is increasing.

My PMD has all 3000+- tunes on it; a device about the size of a half dollar coin. No limits, in other words!

Because Zep's studio version of Immigrant Song is so short, may I suggested getting the live version from How The West Was Won? Longer and more brutal as it has the solo that never was in the studio version.

Increasing the treadmill time, reducing the bike time. Now 25 minutes each. In the event that spring/summer ever shows, biking and weights will go away and walking the great out of doors will commence.

I am actually looking forward to that first horse fly bite. Ok, that may be a stretch.

The Horse Fly bite is a stretch, but understandable.

Walked outdoors finally; 4 miles yesterday and today. It is still pretty chilly at 0600 hours; 20F with no wind on Tuesday and 30F with 10 mph today. When the sun rises it seems warmer. All good, in any case.....

I met 41 vehcles on my walk this morning and every driver waved at me in the neighborly rural way. One more reason to live in the country.
Posted By: the stick Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 04/03/13 11:06 PM
It was so windy here today that I could only walk one direction. I had a heck of a time getting back home.

It takes a 2 person team of walkers and 2 4WD trucks to make that won-way with the wind walking work.

I was working out Cheap Trick - Ain't that a Shame was on loud. There was a huge thunder clap that covered the music, sent Zeke two feet in the air with his tail 3 inches thick, and caused sleeping Gail to jump out of bed to check for broken windows.

Everything is ice covered. The ice even took down my American Flag. I hung it in the warehouse to melt and dry.

A lot of action!.

Good song, 2:06 intro on a 5:11 track. You got to like that. Crowd very excited at Budokan. How are things on Bremer Pond? Walked 4.4 miles today.

Spring has sprung, the skunks are out, just sniff about.
Matin' time is gettin' near, you can smell it in the air.
Posted By: Dwight Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 05/15/13 04:01 PM
Toughest 4 miles.

My toughest walking route is all gravel roads with elevation changing approximately 200 feet on 4 separate hills. The elevation changes make a 4 mile hour much tougher than a flat four miler.

2014 has been one of those rough periods. So, feeling a little overwhelmed with life's "stuff" I started up my winter workouts at the end of summer.

Ten days in I am feeling great and have dropped 10 pounds.

Why do we know that working out is all good but still find it so easy to quit and so hard to start again?

My long term strategy is to grow younger with age. Working out, letting the hair grow long, fishing more, working smarter rather than harder, ignoring politics, etc are all a part of that strategy.

Dave is still here.

Like most others, I make New Years Resolutions just about every month regarding exercise and diet. And, I can follow the not eating stupid stuff fairly well. But, an exercise regimen is my weak point. I'm usually good for a couple of days but then forget all about it.

I'm 71, 200 lbs and feel pretty good. Yeah, I'm on Lipitor. I need to weigh about 175 and could make it with an infusion of discipline.

Atkins (low carb) diet allows pretty much all the cheese and meat (included the beloved bacon) that you care to eat any time of the day. Heck, bread is just the holder, anyway!

You got it right Dwight!
Exercise program was my key to survival during my stressful 24/7 years. I would run or walk every day, rain or shine and it got to be addictive. Continued to this very day, but at a snails pace at the local Rec Center. Nearing 90 years, I struggle to even walk a straight line and work hard to recover lost muscle mass after endless days hospitalized.

In every life a little rain will fall - it's better to face adversity in good health - keep up the good work!

I made these flat bread pizzas this morning and put them in the frig for our evening meal. Under 10 net carbs each.

I use the Flatout flatbreads and Rao's Homemade Marinara sauce.

Toppings:
sausage
pepperoni
grilled chicken breast
fresh green peppers
fresh mushrooms
mozzarella cheese
Parmesan cheese

Hey Dwight I got some of the Flatouts and made some nacho chips. Cut one up into the triagle shapes, baked in the over 300 for 15 minutes to get crispy, and then ate with homemade salsa. When your on Atkins, any little normal thing is a treat. It was pretty good stuff, Thanks for the tip on the flatouts. I'll try the pizza next

Have you tried any of the Atkins Indulge products? There are times when a person needs something sweet and these fill the bill. They are expensive, but I don't imagine making chocolate candies with 1 net carb per serving is that easy of a job.

BP 116/70, resting heart rate 68. All three numbers are down about 10 points since September 4. I attribute most of this improvement to letting the hair grow. Longer hair allows stress to be ejected farther away from the brain.......

Posted By: John Monroe Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 11/07/14 01:13 PM
Dwight I only now started reading this thread so keep up the good work on your health.

I will give some of my experiences on health over the many years to my now 80 age.

I started working with weights at 16 and carried that till now when I can work around injuries that happen quite frequently now. I built a workout room onto my house 30 years ago. So I have always been serious about health. Picture.
So I should have been pretty healthy I thought. In a stress test I passed with flying colors, the Doctor said, but why don't you take a Calcium Coronary Scan. I did and flunked badly. This test shows how clogged the 4 heart arteries are but not specifically where they are clogged. The test is only $60 without insurance. I had my brother in law take the test and he was worse then I was and he was 6 years younger and played basket ball once a week with the guys. So he also was getting lots of exercise. So my point is exercise is important but what you eat is even more so.

My cholesterol numbers weren't that good and neither were my blood pressure numbers. My numbers are all really good now.
My brother in law and I went on a really strict vegan life stile following Dr. Esselstyn's book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. I followed this for three years then added grilled chicken breast and salmon once a week, and one to two drinks daily. I also walk 3 miles cross country 365 for the last 5 years.

Dr. Esselstyn took 17 people who were very sick. They had had heart attacks, bypass operations, angioplasty, pills, you name it. These people had by and large been sent home to die by their cardiologists, their heart disease so severe nothing further could be done. Doctors told several they would be dead in "less than a year."

But they didn't die. Instead, each agreed to become part of Dr. Esselstyn's study, and adopted a low-fat plant-based diet as their medicine. 12 years later every one of these patients was alive, free of heart disease, and living full, active lives. Even those originally given a death sentence of "one year to live" are alive today 21 years later.

I think a really low amp 120VAC electrical massage does wonders to exorcize the brain and CNS. Just don't over do it wink laugh

A guy at work last week was fixing a homeowners DIY electrical project, and trust me, this was really bad!

Anyway, he touches this external mounted wire molding and get's a pretty good jolt. Goes in the box and drops the breaker. Opens up the raceway (molding) and they are using a bare wire for neutral in a metallic raceway and no ground.

Asked him how he felt after the poke? Said he felt great!, just didn't know if his number was being called at the moment wink

Dwight, I respect your change. Only 8 years ago I was 305 lbs. I dropped down to 220 lbs going with pretty much an all fat diet. I also lowered my cholesterol, tri's, blood pressure all to mid normal ranges. I usually hit the elliptical in Jan through April. Right now I'm at 230 lbs and would like to get to 200 lbs. I'm 6'2" and 49 years old. My weight has always been a problem since college.

When you work your entire High School and College periods to gain weight for football, and then it's over, weight loss and maintenance can be real tough. 275 lbs looks real different when you spend 5000 to 6000 calories on a typical day working out and lifting at 20 years old. Even getting to 240 lbs, at this age, gets my key blood indicators to near diabetic levels without the activity level I once had.

I wish you well on your journey, it's a tough one for me. Constant vigilance and sacrifice at the table are all I know now.
Posted By: Dave Davidson1 Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 10/15/15 11:29 AM

Yes, I wondered about that statement also, Guv.

Originally Posted By: Dave Davidson1

And some protein. I stayed under 20 carbs a day, no sugar, no alcohol. My problem is always those hot summer days which DEMAND any good IPA beer.

Mostly went like this;

Breakfast- 1/2 pound bacon or sausage with 2 or three eggs.

Lunch- Crab leg, shrimp, burger patties with cheddar cheese, blah blah

Dinner- Prime Rib, Crab leg, barbecue ribs made with splenda or stevia instead of sugar in the sauce, green beans, burger patties, shrimp stir fry, new york strip, filet mignon, lobster.

It gets a bit boring but I can eat all I want, no limits. Your body goes into ketosis and just burns up the fat you have stored.

When I get bored of this I'll switch for a few weeks and go 2000 calorie straight diet and then switch back after a while.

An all fat and protein diet is very expensive to be on and about triples your individual grocery bill but you have to suffer to get what you want smile

Seriously, high cholesterol, what's that? High blood pressure, what's that? It just pizzes off the doctors when I go in for check ups and they ask how my levels are so low. My main doctor is a bit, shall we say "normal". When I told him what I did, he told me that's exactly what he does.

I'm fortunate in that I have never struggled in this regard. I'm just shy of 6', and never been over 160 lbs. I still have the 33" waist I had when I graduated high school, 31 years ago. I don't eat what I would consider healthy, so I suppose it's due to activity. If I ever slow down I'm probably in trouble.

I noticed that a lot of people were having success with the nutrient dense Paleo diet, so I gave it a try, and have since benefited greatly.

At first it seems daunting to give up grains, legumes, sugar, dairy and whatnot, but after just a few days the positive results (including the anti-inflammatory benefits) make the diet very desirable. I can eat as much as I want, but I seldom feel hungry. You can eat as much lean meat as you want, but I prefer my Paleo diet to be vegetable centric, only eating meat a few times a week.

With the help of minimal exercise (15 minutes every other day) I dropped 40 pounds in about 12 weeks. I even lost my belly fat! That was about 6 months ago. At 53, I'm currently maintaining a svelte 5'11" 160 pound, lean, mean, muscle bound machine. At this rate I'm thinking of trying out for "American Ninja Warrior" in the near future. grin

When the doc said the nurse interpreted my high potassium levels incorrectly due to additions they use in the tests, he said live it up on your foods. I weigh pretty close to what I was at 17 when I got out of HS.

I'm glad that was a screw up because I use to drink (2) 12oz V8 juices pretty much every morning. Tried one last week and the sodium content really took the peace out of things.

Tim, I tried the no carb diet a couple of years ago and it worked. Of course, like all regimens, when I started adding a little bit of carbs the fat came back pretty quickly.

I'm 5 ft 11 inches and 205 lbs. I think about 1/2 of that is now belly and I feel like a damn slob.

No carbs means no bread, cereal, sugars, booze, etc. That gets old pretty quickly.

"Off Season" means off carbs season.

My current routine is 20 carbs or less a day, average. If over one day; make it up the following day(s).

I have found the workouts to be more of a feel good effort rather than a weight loss activity. Obviously, the more calories you burn the more weight you may lose as a secondary benefit. I work out 1 hour each day. If I miss a day or two in a week I don't let it bother me. The trick is to make the workout a normal part of your day. A 0545 wake up; then workout.

Vodka has no carbs. I limit myself to one beer per week, usually on the weekend.

It has been nearly 1 month since I rebooted my workout and low carb routine. I am down a Bremerpond 7 lb LMB and feeling great.

The workout no longer causes any soreness so it is about time to up the weights and measures.

You didn't have to post this. I'm putting it off every day.

Stink lines emanating from Texas near Dave's house. Must have started sweating it out on the pound wacker.

That would probably be Allen Hall. He's lost 30 pounds. If he shaved and got a haircut it would probably more.

I'm enjoying my slovenliness. Over the last couple of years I've developed an enviable set of table muscles. If I fell forward I'd bounce right back on my feet.

Charlene is shopping for a Nautilus Elliptical. She says it's in my best interest and I will enjoy it.

When I was doing the physical therapy thing, the gal showed me a number of very simple exercise's to do for a guy who is not really over weight and not trying to be a body builder or athlete, just some maintenance, and they work great!

No, I am not buying any equipment grin

a couple of yr's ago I booked my first elk hunt and to get into shape, I walked in a full size Olympic pool. Back and forth the length of the pool. it worked great. I did this because it took my weight off my back and allowed me to walk a distance I was not able to do normally. I need to start doing it again.

How did it work when you got into the skinny oxygen area?
Posted By: TGW1 Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 11/22/15 11:10 AM
Dave, as far as the skinny oxygen, I think walking in that pool must have helped with that also, but after the hunt and then lighting up probably did not help so much smile I used to walk a tread mill at home every morning while watching Fox but woke up one morning with some serious back problems and that stopped the treadmill workout. I really need to get back to the walking in the pool. It takes the weight off the back but gives resistance in moving against the water and gave me strength I did not have prior to the pool walking. I also lost some weight, but I don't remember the number. Now if I could come up with something to strengthen my week mind?

Dave, I'll never cut my hair. My Thor-like strength comes from my flowing platinum mane.

I actually hit light heavyweight(205), and was told to stop by my boss. I think the final tally was 58 pounds shed over a 2 year period.

Al, "Thor like strength" " Flowing Platinum Mane" That's funny smile When we met @ the PBC and I noticed your longer hair, I just thought you were saving money from not getting haircuts, and spending that money on the pond. smile And I am sure you noticed my longer hair, Platinum and wavy, I did it because I have always had long hair and the girls like to run their hands through it smile

PS, I hate spending money on hair cuts

" My Thor-like strength comes from my flowing platinum mane."

Probably a few more things 'caused by that too...

I'm feeling bullied now. I knew we should have put in a safe room when I had pre-retirement $$$.

Just go to any college campus now, and find the 'safe space' so you can 'heal.'
Posted By: FireIsHot Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 11/23/15 10:11 PM
No reason to now. Just the thought of going back to college cured me.

Sunil, you're a miracle worker.
Posted By: Dwight Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 12/03/15 01:30 PM
I liked college; a lot to do and no classes to attend. The cramming was tough at the end of the semester, but worth it to keep on going. I was in college late 60s+. We didn't need "safe spaces for healing".

A few our our Phi Sigma Kappa slogans for various years' Greek Week's were:

1) "We do less all day than most people do before 9AM."
2) "Don't touch me, I'm psychedelic."

Sunil, you must have gone to one of those fancy universities. IIRC, all I got was a participation trophy for my 7 years worth of dedicated effort.

Dwight, I'm highly impressed you can remember college! Sunil also, for that matter! laugh

Personally, I'm a degreed high school dropout! lol

Yes, still at it. Monday I move up a notch in Bowflex "weights". Anyone else working out this morning?

I got an elliptical, and love it.

Had my annual physical today. BP 114/72, pulse 69. Blood work excellent. Weighed in 3 pounds lighter too.

Could live a little longer smile

Back to working out after the new left knee install. Graduated from Physical therapy last week and last checkup at the Sports Medicine place tomorrow.
Posted By: djstauder Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 11/27/17 02:08 PM
How's your new knee feeling? Was the procedure and recovery very painful?
Posted By: Dwight Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 11/28/17 11:16 PM
Knee is doing great. The first week there is a lot of pain. I hate the pain meds so try to get off them ASAP. After that with doing the exercises and going to physical therapy things improve fairly quickly.

Unless you need a knee replacement, I don't recommend it. smirk

Great to hear you are doing so well Dwight! smile

Re-fired the work out room this morning. Everything still works, including me (though some slower with the load added from Thanksgiving and Christmas).
Posted By: snrub Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 01/02/19 02:13 PM
Keep after it.

Wife had second knee replaced less than a year ago. She was scuba diving 3 months after, although with me and the boat crew doing the heavy lifting with the tanks and weights. She is diving nearly daily now off the dock and getting along fine. Still a pinch of stiffness or soreness here and there, but nothing compared to before the operations.

You fellas still working out. I got up to 240 LBS about 3 years ago. I'm about 6'2"ish. I started working out (CrossFit sometimes). I lost about 50 pounds pretty fast then been tryin to pack on muscle the last couple years. Its hard to stick with it all the time. I'm at about 215ish now. I'm 43 so the muscle don't pack on as easy as it used to. I go 4-5 times a week just straight free weights no cardio. I can still out run all my kids 18,17, and 11 year old twins. So I figured that's good enough.
Posted By: Dwight Re: Bod and Brain Aerobics - 12/17/19 08:18 PM
When I was 43 I put in 4 miles most days, jogging. Was smoking two packs a day or more and partying plenty too.

At 45, (26 years ago) I quit smoking and jogging but not partying. Went walking and working out on the various machines.

Stilling doing the walking and various machines, just not a far and not as vigorously. Partying is never late and not very vigorous either.

I weigh about the same as I did at 43 though have spiked up significantly during periods of working out less and eating more.

Life is a balancing act in most ways.
