I saw Sunils sig line and wondered who everyone like in the "big game" (dang copyright laws). Myself, I like the Cards to win in an upset.

Cards - 31
Steelers - 22

Warner is still very popular and has most of STL's support, including mine.

If the cards offensive line gives even a little protection, and the recievers don't drop every pass, Warners arm and accuracy is unbeatable!

You just made the list, Rainman!

Can I get a witness for the Steelers?

jsec, needapond, JoeG, RobA, catmandoo, anyone????

Two truisms:

1. Whoever Bruce wants to get into the Super Bowl NEVER makes it.

2. Whoever Bruce ends up rooting for in the Super Bowl always loses.

Does anybody want to pay me to root for the opposing team?
Posted By: LOVELACE LAKE Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/29/09 06:53 PM
Bruce I got a trip to the LL2 for you, if you root for the Steelers even tho the Cards dont need any help.

I gotta go with Lovalace Lake, seeing as the Cards are an old Chi-town team.
What would be more fiscally responsible for Bruce's compensation: cash or AquaMax?

It's the same with me. As a teenager, I once went outside and voluntarily shovelled snow in lieu of watching the second half of one of the Vikings' poorer showings.

Damn Steelers won that game, too. I have since learned to like yellow & black.

Gotta root for the Cards. Even though they moved away from St. Louis a long time ago they are about as close as a St. Louis team is going to get to a superbowl for a long time. I'm afraid the Rams have a long road ahaid of them.
Posted By: Sunil Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/29/09 09:57 PM
After seeing the way this thread is swaying, I took it upon myself to call Fattay on his cell phone. Of course, he screens his calls, so I had to leave a message.

I briefly chastized him for screening his calls and then proceeded to show empathy knowing that he was most likely a Cowboys fan, and accordingly, because they lost, he should be rooting for the Steelers, not Arizona.

So one of my front office staff informs me that I have a voice mail in our general office message center from someone named "Sattay" that talks of beer, barbecue, the Steelers losing, and the Cardinals winning.

Now my whole front office wants a piece of Fattay. I told them they didn't know what they were asking for.
I enjoy lighting a match, throwing it on a pile of gasoline soaked rags, and running away gleefully as I giggle.
PS. The ribs and cold beer were FANTASTIC today at Angelo's (former meeting place of a mini PB regional)

Posted By: needapond Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/30/09 04:39 AM
Sunil,

Clearly there is an unhealthy level of Steeler envy on this site. Texas contingent still wakes up with the shakes at night remembering Bradshaw and Swann while the Viking faithful can't get the image of LC Greenwood chasing Tarkington all over the field.

Not to worry. The Steelers will prevail for a couple of reasons.
1st -- Experience (been there done that), and 2nd, This will be very similar to a home game for the Steelers. Latest estimates have the crowd ratio at about 75% Steelers, 15% neutral and 10% Cardinals. The noise level when the Cards have the ball will be deafening and will make it difficult for Warner to audible at the line or to run a hurry-up offense.

Steelers 23 --- Cards --- 17. Fitzgerald will have a good game but will not dominate. Key of the game will be the Steelers offense against the Cardinals defense. If the Steelers have any level of success running the ball the game will be over.

I hated LC for years for that. But I forgave him when he recorded that wonderfully patriotic song, God Bless the USA.
Posted By: jsec Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/30/09 11:27 AM
I'll go with Steelers East, Steelers West needs a couple more players to get over the top.

Coaches

1. Ken Whisenhunt- Obviously, the Whiz has strong ties to the Burgh, being that he was an assistant under Bill Cowher for 6 seasons. He was the Offensive Coordinator for 3 years, including in the Super Bowl, and the tight ends coach for 3 years before that. Many fans were hoping he would be the head coach when Cowher retired, but I think things worked out pretty well for all parties this way.

2. Russ Grimm- Grimm has as many ties to the Burgh as anyone in football, probably. He was born in Scottdale, PA, and of course played his college ball at Pitt before a tremendous NFL Career. Grimm coached the Offensive Line for 6 years here in Pittsburgh, and spent the last 3 years of that time as the Assistant Head Coach. Most considered him to be the favorite to land the head coaching job when Cowher retired before Tomlin pulled the big upset.

3. Kevin Spencer- The Steelers former Special Teams coach who followed Whiz and Grimm out west.

4. Todd Haley- son of former Steelers director of player personnel Dick Haley, he was also a ballboy for the Steelers in the 70's dynasty days. Nepotism much? He also went to Upper St. Clair High School during that time.

5. Kevin Spencer- He was the Steelers special teams coach from 2002-2006 and then left the Burgh with Whiz.

6. Teryl Austin- The defensive backs coach of the Cardinals is from Sharon, PA and went to Pitt, so he's OK in my book. He started for 3 years at Pitt and graduated in 1988.

7. Bill Davis- The linebackers coach for the Cards spent 3 seasons (1992-94) as a defensive assistant for the Steelers. Also, its not Pittsburgh (or even Pennsylvania) but he is from Youngstown.

8. John Lott- The Cards strength and conditioning coach played for the Steelers in 1987.

9. Mike Miller- Miller is the Cards receivers coach and has numerous ties to the Burgh. He attended Plum High School, and followed that up by going to college at Clarion. He was an intern with the Steelers, and then he spent two years as the Running Backs coach at Robert Morris. Finally, he worked as an offensive assistant for the Steelers from 1999-2003.

10. Matt Raich- He is a defensive assistant for the Cards, and worked for the Steelers during Cowher's tenure as both an offensive assistant and as an intern. But it doesn't stop there. No, he spent 3 years at Robert Morris as a coach and 2 years at Westminster. And of course, he's from Monaca and graduated from Westminster and is even in their Hall of Fame.

Players

11. Larry Fitzgerald- Of coures, Larry went down in history as one of the best offensive players in Pitt history with two unbelievable seasons at the school in 2002 and 2003. He won countless awards, was nominated for (and nearly won) the Heisman Trophy. He owns every single-season receiving record the Panthers have and is the best player I've ever seen wearing the Panther jersey (sorry Shady you weren't quite at that level).

12. Steve Breaston- Everyone remembers the incredible hype surrounding Breaston when he came out of Woody High and went to Michigan. He was one of the most spectacular high school players around in his day. The college career probably didn't go as well as he'd hoped, but he's been very good with the Cards.

13. Levi Brown- I don't usually include Penn State as a Pittsburgh tie, but in this case I'm doing so in order to boost my total number.

14. Reggie Wells- Wells, many don't know this, is from Library, PA and went to college at Clarion. Could you have possibly imagined there would be 2 Clarion ties and 2 Robert Morris ties to the Super Bowl? I couldn't have.

15. Gerald Hayes- Hayes was the first of several very good middle linebackers to come through Pitt and has turned into an excellent pro.

16. Sean Morey- Of course, Morey was the special teams specialist for the Steelers for 3 seasons and won a Super Bowl ring here. He's technically a receiver even though he caught 6 passes in those 3 years.

17. Brian St. Pierre- That's right, the quintessential 3rd string QB is still hanging around the league. He attempted his only career pass as a Steeler.

18. Jerame Tuman- Tuman spent 9 seasons with the Steelers to start his career. He caught 43 passes and scored 6 touchdowns in his time in the Burgh, but was never anything more than a second tight end.

19. Clark Haggans- Haggans technically isn't on the Cards active roster, and he was placed on injured reserve in December. Clark spent his first 7 seasons as a Steeler and recorded 32.5 sacks over that time.

20. Pat Ross- He played for Ohio in the Big 33 Classic. Obviously, not really a Pittsburgh connection, but this is something that is closely linked to the Burgh.

21. Keilen Dykes- Played at West Virginia and is from Youngstown. So basically he danced around the Pittsburgh area.
Posted By: Dave Davidson1 Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/30/09 01:00 PM
It all depends on who wants it more. I'm figuring on the Cards having the emotional edge. Warner seems to be the more consistent QB.

Tom Landry once said that offense scores points but defense wins games.

I'll sleep well either way.

I'm calling you right now Fattay.
Like my new sig addition?
Posted By: Sunil Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/30/09 04:47 PM
After a lengthy discussion with Fattay, I now have a deeper understanding of his wayward position.

Fattay is merely concerned that only the Cowboys and the Steelers have (5) SB Rings.

He does not want to see the Steelers reach a new plateau in professional football.

Sadly enough, I was unable to convince him that he should be rooting for the Steelers just to prove that (6) SB Rings can be accomplished especially without cheating.

Furthermore, Fattay went to highschool and played football with Tommy Maddox who was the Steelers QB, albeit injured, when we took the SB in '05.

I feel that we can turn Fattay, but I need support.

Accordingly, anyone who would like to call Fattay need only send me a PM to which I will reply with his cell phone number.

Mind you, Fattay likes to receive calls in the wee hours of the morning, say 3-5 AM.

Sorry Sunil, no can do. DIED is the Vice President of the GSA. It would take a direct order from the president of the GSA (Dave Davidson) along with my approval (Sergent At Arms) and an approval from 73.1% of the clubs membership before I could terminate an officer. The only other method is for me to get all John Gotti on him and he gives me free wine and beer every time I'm at his house so I don't see that happening. Besides that would move me up the the VP position and I don't want all of that stress.

Besides what did DIED do to you anyway?

WE INTERRUPT YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING TO ANSWER THE QUESTION THAT SHAWN BANKS HAD REGARDING THE GSA:

 Originally Posted By: Shawn Banks

Shawn, we would be delighted to have you as a member of the GSA. Yes you can be both a member of BISA and the GSA. We rarely have any conflict BISA that we cannot work out over a vigorous game of Quarters (unfortunately we are 7 for 24 against BISA in Quarters Death Matches as Sunil is both deadly accurate and has an unbelievable propensity to hold his alcohol. How are you at quarters Shawn?) Oh and by the way in an ironic twist of fate we predict Cardinals 7, Steelers 24.

In order to join the GSA Shawn you must take the following pledge:

I pledge to manage my pond in the best interest of the almighty green sunfish and protect this beautiful species from heretical blasphemy.

Re: membership dues
The GSA does not require ANY membership dues. We are 100% supported via extortion, misappropriation, kidnap for ransom, black mail and other time honored fund raising activities. You may however be called upon at some time in the future to serve your Association in whatever capacity that we deemed necessary to further the cause of the GSA. It is possible that this service could include less than legal and/or less than moral activities. Once a member of the GSA you are a member for life, only the GSA can terminate your membership privileges.

GSA National Anthem written by DIED:
O beautiful for spacious waters,
For amber fins of glory,
For emerald streaks majesties
Above the oxygenated pond bottom!
GREEN SUNFISH!, OH GREEN SUNFISH!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From pond to shining pond!

You now may return to your regularily scheduled programming.

Dang David, I now know where I'd rather be on Sunday.
Posted By: Shawn Banks Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/31/09 06:56 PM
I accept membership and have given my pledge. I also vow to no longer refer to green sunfish as green scummers, nor will I bank them during electrofishing surveys. I must be educated as to whether I can still use them as bait while flathead fishing.

I will begin a training regiment to re-hone my skills at playing quarters so that I am an asset at the next PB Conference. To take down Sunil will be a difficult challenge, but I suspect he will take a drink regardless of the shot being made.

The GSA's prediction of tomorrow evening's game seems to be an accurate assessment of what will happen.

One of my favorite players in the league is Troy Polamalu. He wears #43. When added together, we get 7. The seventh letter in the alphabet is "G". I think the "G" stands for Green Sunfish. He may be trying to communicate with us. Further, he is from California where the GSA is headquartered. Coincidence?? I think not. What's this mean? There will be a green sunfish on the field tomorrow. Watch for roaming behaviour and a knack for devouring the competition.
Posted By: Sunil Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 01/31/09 07:32 PM
Outstanding piece of writing there Shawn.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say YES, you can use a GSF for bait, kind of like a Kamikazee (sp?) aspect. You know, sort of noble and valiant, and maybe a little dumb too.

I gotta admit, GSF make some fine flathead bait... I like em over BG. They are just so mean, must make the flatties like 'em that much more!

Excellent, you have been added to the GSA membership roster. Your decoder ring and secret hand shake instructional DVD will be sent via mail.

Although we prefer you use trash fish such as Blue Gill, Red Ears, Pumpkinseed, Yellow Perch for bait we do recognize that on occasion you must sacrafice the mighty GSF in pursuit of the perfect pond. The GSA recognizes that culling must occur in order to enhance the GSF population as a whole. When you take the life of a GSF however we recommend that you thank the GSF for giving it's life in such a noble and brave manner. You may do this silently and there is no formal wording requirement.

Your dedication to the GSA cause has been noted. Sunil is a fierce competitor and I am sure that he is in training as well.

He may be trying to communicate with us. Further, he is from California where the GSA is headquartered. Coincidence?? I think not. What's this mean? There will be a green sunfish on the field tomorrow. Watch for roaming behaviour and a knack for devouring the competition.

Fantastic analysis.

Welcome to the GSA.

I have corrected your quote Sunil using the assumption that you were in training for a sudden death Quarters competition and you judgement became somewhat clouded.

Unfortunately we find that many people use GSF as bait. Although we don't encourage this practice we do understand that it does occur. Since the magnificent GSF is the at the pinnacle of the sunfish family tree they shall always be a target.

Wow Dave, that two-hour time difference from pacific to central makes a big difference.

The game is over here--Steelers won 34-17. ;\)

Oh Hi Sunil

I think Sunil says "hi" back.

The FIRST thing I thought when Arizona scored is the same thing I thought when UT scored on Tech to take the lead at the end of the game: THEY SCORED TOO FAST!

Too much time left for Pittsburgh.
wow what a game!
great game...
like i said, big ben was on a mission......

Or not.
Posted By: Greg Grimes Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 02/02/09 12:30 PM
Congrats Sunil. Heck congrats to me. All I wanted was a competetive game since no real vested interest. That I beleive was the best super bowl especailly the last what 10 mins. Both teams had confidence they could win and it was just so dang fun to watch.

We had about 20 folks over the betting squares were a big hit since the score changed back and forth in the 4th qtr. The duck poppers and vension chili were mighty tasty as well.
Posted By: jeffhasapond Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 02/02/09 02:15 PM
I only watched the last five minutes of the game (like I said before, I'm not a huge pro sports fan) but WOW what a five minutes to watch. One of the best five minutes of football I've ever seen. Fantastic! Congrats Sunil.
Posted By: jeffhasapond Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 02/02/09 02:16 PM
Sunil is MIA. I hope he's ok. No post last night and it's 9:16 AM back there and still no post.
Congrats Sunil,

I was really hoping for a Cards win...just for the fun of talking smack!!
Posted By: Brettski Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 02/02/09 03:03 PM
Although that last Steeler TD was the final nail in the coffin for Warner & Co, it tallied the numbers that put $200 into Dski's pocket for the football pool.
I sure hope she reacts in a fiscally responsible manner.

Unfortunately, I have to hold off on any commentary because my memory of the second half is lacking at best.

What I do remember clearly though is thinking "Man, we're going to lose this game," and then the interception, and then thinking again "Man, are we going to give this away again?"

I did record the game and might have to watch it again.
Corona strikes again!!!!!

As Homer Simpson once said, "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how drunk you get."
Posted By: Sunil Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 02/02/09 04:23 PM
Actually it was Peroni.

I'm still waiting for the headache to kick in.
Posted By: Shawn Banks Re: Who do you like in the Super Bowl - 02/02/09 04:35 PM
It was a shame that someone had to lose. However, I always pull for the teams with the most "blue-collar" fans. Kansas City is due.

Congrats, Sunil. May you be blessed with no hang-over later this morning.

Ole and Sven die in a snowmobiling accident, drunker than skunks, and go to hell. The Devil observes that they are really enjoying themselves. He says to them "Doesn't the heat and smoke bother you?" Ole replies, "Vell, ya know, ve're from nordern Michigan, da land of snow an ice, an ve're yust happy fer a chance ta varm up a little bit, don't ya know."

The devil decides that these two aren't miserable enough and turns up the heat even more. When he returns to the room of the two guys from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the devil finds them in light jackets and hats, grilling walleye and drinking beer. The devil is astonished and exclaims, "Everyone down here is in abject misery, and you two seem to be enjoying yourselves?" Sven replies, "Vell, ya know, ve don't git too much varm veather up dere at da Soo, so ve've yust got ta haff a fish fry vhen da veather's dis nice."

The devil is absolutely furious. He can hardly see straight. Finally he comes up with the answer. The two guys love the heat because they have been cold all their lives. The devil decides to turn all the heat off in Hell. The next morning, the temperature is 60 below zero, icicles are hanging everywhere, and people are shivering so bad that they are unable to wail, moan or gnash their teeth. The devil smiles and heads for the room with Ole and Sven. He gets there and finds them back in their parkas, bomber hats, and mittens. They are jumping up and down, cheering, yelling and screaming like mad men. The devil is dumbfounded, "I don't understand, when I turn up the heat you're happy. Now its freezing cold and you're still happy. What is wrong with you two?" They both look at the devil in surprise and say, "Vell, don't ya know; if hell is froze over, dat must mean da Lions von da Super Bowl!"
