Pond Boss
The new 3/10 acre pond I dug a few weeks ago only has a couple feet of water in it. (But it's only rained twice and had one snow melt in it since it was dug) My wildlife pond doesn't have any water in it, no rain since I dug it.

I know it's dependent on what part of the country, size of pond, watershed etc. but just curious as to how long it took everyone's ponds to fill.

Eric,

My first pond (0.25 acres) filled in a couple of days after some summer thunderstorms opened up on us. My second pond (0.15 acres, +/- 300000 gallons) filled in about 12 hours after a freak 8" rainstorm hit our area last fall.
Finished in September, filled in November.
16 weeks and only have a puddle in the bottom. \:\(
You guys must have some serious watershed to fill up a pond that quick! Just talked to one of my friends at church and he said his half acre pond (which is 5 miles or so from mine, and has similar amount of watershed) filled in 6 months.
3.5 acre pond in middle Geprgia average depth 7 feet. As we were just finishing the dam in the middle of the 2000 drought the forecast called for a major front comming through so we closed the valve(don't ask again Dave), it blew through Atlanta and stalled right on top of my pond. Pond filled in eight hours even with a bone dry watershed
I agree. If there is no spring filling it up right away, one has to wait for the rain. If one has to wait for rain, then it could be hours, days, months, or should I say, possibly, years. The guy in Arica, Chile is still waiting for his pond to fill and its been 50 years. \:\)

Don't blame me, I don't control or command the weather.

He never even posts here anymore. ;\)
We finished up our 7/8 ac. pond the end of May last year. We're in Mo. and in a drought, ponds prob. not a third full.A small spring runs into the pond and it went dry last year ,I'm told the first time in 40 yrs. It's running now.I'm really worried that we might have a leak, lots of rock when we had it dug. Quess I'll have to wait till it fills up to know for sure.To think I thought we'd be stocking last year.
Pray for rain.
Mike
Took my pond 2 years to fill.
THe one I built in 1998 filled with in weeks. The other one on land I purchased lat year filled in a month. Neither have been full since.
I completed my pond in november of 04 and in the spring it filled about 2/3 full but now because of the drought it is only about 1/3 full. I am always hoping for rain to fill it up.

I was a project engineer on Lake Georgetown in Texas in 1979. We completed the dam and it sat there 5 months and then filled up with 140 feet of water in one day, (7 inches of rain on a 200 sq. mile drainage basin). This Lake is 7 miles long.
Pretty impressive how fast some of these ponds are filling up.

Got most of my grass seed sowed out there today, and should be able to finish sowing in and around the pond banks tomorrow. After that I'll be ready for those gully washer Spring rains to really put some water in the ponds.
Jas- I wondered if I could ask you, how does a engineer on a large lake handle problems with possible seepage control and leaks while the project is still in the planning phase? Then how is something as large as a lake sealed while in construction?
My Pond is about 2.5 acres. Finished digging late summer of 04 and it filled by November of 04. Summer of 05 was pretty dry around here and the water level dropped about 18". It filled back up by November.
First pond, dammed in Nov of '03...got to within about 2 feet of full pool last June...now it's about 5 feet low.

2nd pond dammed up last July. It's got a large puddle, maybe 5 feet deep in it...but it's RAINING RIGHT NOW!!! \:D
