At the Ga meeting at one point Greg and I were trying to explain just how big this one grass carp we shocked up was... here's the pic:

Also, here's my neighbor (with an assist from his 3 year old) holding a 13" bass that died trying to eat an 11" bass. I found them dead in this exact state, in about 2' of water. Never underestimate the ambition of these fish!

Just curious... was this a triploid grass carp or just diploid? Does George require triploids like many of the other states that allow grass carp?

Also how easy do they shock up? I've seen big muskies just jump out of the way. I'm wondering because I may use electroshocking as a way to reduce their numbers if I need to as I now have a unit.

You would think that the 11" LMB could have easily thrashed out of the 13"'s mouth and should not have died. Do they leach some poison or something, or is there jaws that strong to hold on to a slippery head of another fish?

Cecil: I think Triploid, but I'm not sure, Greg would know (he stocked them for us). Shocking them up isn't very easy actually, we just happened to pin that one against the bank, normally they'll scare the heck out of you and actually broach like a dolphin sometimes.

ceadmin: I think their jaws are just that strong, it was pretty amazing to see.

I think he just bit off more than he could chew. Truly amazing. Looks like a public pond that needs some forage?

burgermeister, that was two years ago, soon after I moved into the neighborhood and the first summer after Greg and I started managing the fishery. The first time we shocked we found ZERO BG under 7", everything was 7-9" or 9"+. After two years of pretty aggressive forage stocking things are much more in balance now, I can't wait until we shock this spring to see how my Wr numbers look. Last year we found large numbers of BG in every size class from 1" to 9"+, and the bass were a lot healthier too.

ceadmin we see this with bass pretty often, just shows you how agressive they CAN be.

Cecil we have been hired to remove large grass carp from ponds, does not work too well. We get about 10-30% of 'em. I have shocked one even bigger than this but not very common. You will learn from electrofishing it is all about percentages.

Yep in GA we have to stock triploids. My license to sell all fish is $10 excpet for grass carp it is $236/yr.

Which fish do you mean, Greg? We also use bass that size for bait.

I have (or maybe had) a couple of GC that would go about 30 inches. No way to be sure because they keep busting my line. Having met Troy, I figure that one must be about 4 or maybe 5 ft. long. Did you measure length and or weight? It's a whopper.
