Recent PB magazine article talked about creating habitat for non-fish wildlife. In particular, I noticed that dead trees, sometimes called "snags," are recommended for many bird species. Don't cut them down unless truly necessary for safety!

Well, I have observed exactly that process working at our pond. We have maybe 10 or 12 snags around the water, most of them due to inundation. We've seen a pair of eagles frequently using them, plus a pileated woodpecker, and now two pairs of beautiful wood ducks. No need for us to make wood duck houses when they have snags.

Some day the snags will fall in the water, of course. But when they do, they'll serve as extra cover, benefiting the fish as well.
