I just moved to Texas from Ca. and we now live on a man made lake and have the pleasure of having a dock. I have been having trouble catching bass by our house and have only had luck(very good luck actually) on the other side of the lake. It is stocked with LMB, BG, a few turtles, and Trout in the summer. The lake is 6' deep consistently except for the slope from the abutment which is goes form 10" to 6' quite quickly. I have surveyed the lake trying to find depth change, cover etc. but it is very flat. When we first saw the property, the lake had plant life,but they shock it so I hear.
Here is the improvements that I have done so far,
I sunk four christmas trees cut to 3 and 1/2'tall six feet apart 12'to the left and right of the dock. I also sunk to tree limbs closer in on either side. In the middle, i sunk a verticle car tire. By the way thanks to those who have shown pictures of their home made structure. I live in a HOA ruled area and it is important that I keep everything well below the water line.
What I want to do:
I want to attract more bait fish to my dock so the larger predators will hang around. Is there any suggestions?

I am thinking of dredging a little silt from under the dock and creating a small break under water near the structure. Then adding additional skirt to the dock to provide more shade and protection, maybe lattice?

I have also heard of using green lights, has anyone heard of this attracting small fish at night? the Hoa probably wont let me put the light in the water, but shining from top.

Have you considered feeding off your dock (if permitted by the HOA - Lord knows what those types can think of banning next) (can you tell I live NEXT to a subdivision, not IN it?)? That would get you a regular attendance of BG is easy fishing range, which in turn would help attract bass.

Trout in the summer? Where are you; north of Amarillo?

I agree with Theo. Consistently feeding pellets off your dock would be enough to make the forage hang around long-term. It's only a matter of time before the predators move in.

Besides, taking kiddos BG fishing is about as fun as it gets!

Another thought in addition to the good ones above (feeding off the pier). Get a cage (mesh net or net or plastic netting) and put it in the water next to the pier. Put some FH or small BG or minnows in the cage and feed them. The captive forage fish will attract other fish to the area and you can grow out all of them.

thanks for the responses. I am in Houston and am interested in feeding. Can I just toss it off the dock or do I need to dispense it somehow. How much and what kind would you suggest? Does the food float or sink? I was just reading about aeration which there is a fountain at the end of the finger that I am on, but can the uneating fish food build up toxins in the lake?
By the way, I caught two small bass 6" and a blue gill today off of my new structure.

Green lights do attract fish in, but you have to consistently run it every night to truly get the full effect. If you have any shad in the lake, they will be swarming the light and most species of minnows are attracted as well. They swarm in to feed on all the zooplankton that is attracted to the light. With all the baitfish feeding in the area, it isn't long before the bass, crappie and others come in to feed on the baitfish!

This is an old post but I came across it while looking for idea for how to mount my underwater green fishing lights. I started with one of these above water green fishing lights Edit : Deleted link. for the same reason a couple of you guys have said below. I don't always run it consistently to burn off growth.

Well, now we are out there at the pond a quite a bit and I decided to pull the trigger on a couple of their underwater green fishing lights. I am wanting to mount them underwater on the dock post shining outwards or maybe attach them to a pole that drops down into the water. I really like the pole idea because it's easy to pick them up and remove them when we aren't there so we don't have to deal with maintenance issues.

I see this is an old post but hopefully my feedback helps others since I ended up coming across it trying to solve my problem. I may go ahead and create another post as well, but feedback on my situation is welcome!
