Been cranking out the 70f well water at 30,000+ gph on the cold nights lately and it has made some good fog. As my 3 yr old likes to say "Daddy the wawa is smokin". It was mid 30;s this morning and we had heavy fog around the pond site. With the cold front coming next week and cool weather starting to settle in I will probably stop pumping. Time let the water temps fall until I get ready for a spring jump start.

Whew..... Although that's still more water in a minute's time than my family of four uses in a 24 hr. Period!
Wow, 500 gpm. My well produces 1/10 gpm that I pump into a 2,500 gallon holding tank. I have heard that the "average" family uses about 200 gallons per day. Not sure that # is correct.
The four of us will use between 250-300 gallons in a normal day. Not meant to be critical of Tums at all, but I don't think I could ever get comfortable with using that volume of water to put in my recreational pond. The well over at the ponds will move 35 gpm, and I won't even let it run.
You could keep it pumping and keep it warmed up and stock some reds, snook or other as a few bonus fish. It's pretty nice to be able to keep water a little warmer with a well.
Dave, the USGS says the average person used between 80 to 100 Gallons per day.
SPrkplug, I understand and do not take offense to anyone saying anything about what I do. Like wise if my well only pumped 35 GPM I would not do it either (or if I lived in your geographical area). A good bit of what I have done in the past is a risk taking balancing act. I will not recommend for any person on this site to have over a Ton per acre carrying capacity even though I do it. Basically all I do now it pump warm water in the early cold spells to keep the temps up to increase the length of my growing season. See while it was mid 30's for a low yesterday the high was mid 70's. Next week when it gets 50's and 20's I will not be pumping anymore. Also note it works well in the summer to keep temps and stress down for the higher carrying capacity while adding D.O..
Bobby, That is a thought for something to maybe try in the future. I would love to have some snook. In the past it would cost me about 3K in power to keep the water warm enough to do that all winter. The down side is that much pumping will cost me the good algae. In the past when I pump more that the total pond water volume within 30 days I pretty much flush it. I have to try and balance it when extending growing season by pumping warm water during cold hrs so I do not flush it.
Is the algea as impotant in the winter as it is in the late spring and summer when you have fish eggs hatching into fry that need to eat at the bottom of the food chain?
You could monitor and only run based on water temps. You might not need to run as much as you think based on short air temp drops.

Bobby, The next time I decide to reboot the pond (current plan is around 2022)I can do a set up where the algae is not as important to me. I would really like to try do a pond stocked with brackish water fish.
IMO the Algae helps uptake some of the nutrient load from higher capacity stockings while providing a food base for YOY. I know the Black Crappie I have in there have been doing well so far. My thinking is keeping the Algae going as long as I can will keep the YOY BC from stunting. My thinking is next winter is going to be my make it or break it winter if I get a big BC hatch this spring. At that point I think am going to switch gears on how to manage the pond.
Tums, I guess I know where the average comes from. Me; I take 3 minute showers. However, we can time my Wifes showers by the calendar, not the clock.

The reason I refused to install a very big hot water heater while my kids were teenagers. The water heater limitation was the shower length limiter. Wife was not always happy about running out of hot water for other stuff at times, but it sure got the kids out of the shower in a one bathroom house.
We got a bigger one now that the kids are gone.
