F.A. has been controlled with Talipia.. I have this pond stocked with C.C. Hybrid Blue Gill.. I feed everyday.. But my Question is, How to I control this Duckweed.. Thanks

I used Sonar or should I say I had pond management person apply Sonar to my pond. It had watermeal and duckweed very bad. I had 2 applications applied. I think he used 11 ozs. each application but it may have been 11oz then 9oz. it works very well, but you still have to try and get a handle on the underlying problems pictures before and after

Tilapia will eat duckweed

Maybe the Tilapia might be eating my catfish food(I feed aprox 2 lbs, once a Day) instead of the duckweed... I sure hate to stop feeding the catfish, but that might be the answer

If you provide any kind of artificial feed in the pond with Tilapia, it may reduce their effectiveness at controlling FA and duckweed...and the effectiveness reduction can be significant (up to 70%) depending on how much artificial feed is provided.

Duckweed can be controlled by Tilapia but you need stocking rates much higher than we normally use for FA control and forage production. All situations are different, but generally about 30 pounds per acre has been found to be successful for duckweed control by Tilapia in our area.

We have an aggressive feeding program with three feeders on a 2 acre pond - very seldom see tilapia around feeders and they have done an excellent job on FA control....

LoopTech, how large is your pond and how many tilapia did you stock/acre?
1/4 pound feed is just a spit in the ocean....

We feed an average of 150 lbs per month per year on <2acres, feeding heavier in moderate temp months and less in hot and cold periods.

Having a 5 year old drought ridden, nutrient rich pond with the worse FA problem Todd Overton "had ever seen", with 10/lbs Tilapia per acre this year, cleaned it up in ~three weeks.
Today with full and flushed ponds - clean as a whistle...

Don't know about Duck weed - we have no aquatic vegetation problem, controlled with tilapia, grass carp, and goats to clean up water primrose and shore vegetation.

Same with 1/4 acre pond...

Personally, with severe vegetation problems, I seek advise from a quaified professional fisheries bilogist.

This pond is approx. 1/2 acre.. I stocked with 10 lbs of Tilipia, 250 CC and 75 HBG..

LoopTech, I am not qualified to give advise, so please do not take my comments as such - I will share my experience to help others avoid some of the mistakes I have made.

One of my biggest mistakes was overstocking CC in <2-acre pond - probably about the same number you stocked in 1/2 acre pond.
We are still trying to remove them from our 5+year old pond, and some are as large as 14 pounds...
These numbers of CC along with other species, cause nutrient build-up resulting in excess vegetation that is well controlled in our pond.

Personally, I would give call or email Kelly Duffy and/or Todd Overton about the Duckweed problem.

Thanks.. I use Grazon P+D on my pastures for Broadleaf weed control.. Cattle can grase on the pasture while spraying.. I do not know if this would be and an effective way to control Duckweed.. Heres the link to Grazon P+D

Folks, I can't any Info bout Grazon in water..

Unless a new herbicide for duckweed is on the market, diquat is the herbicide to use.
