Pond Boss

My neighboring subdivision never really paid much attention to their ponds until they had a total fish kill and “moss” started plugging up their irrigation pipe. I went and looked at their ponds today. Here is Doc’s pond.

I’m pretty sure this is chara and and other algae.

The other pond was overrun with what I believe is duckweed. I have not had dealings with it before. Can those here confirm my identifications and give me some ideas for dealing with the duckweed.

Neither of the ponds have fish at the moment. Docs pond will after we get the algae under control, but for the moment a nuclear option for both ponds is on the table.

Brad, did you smell a distinctive musty/sulfur odor from the pondweed? If so, likely chara. If not, perhaps southern naiad.

This pond is about 7800 feet above sea level. The lower one. It smelled like chara. I
