I have a 3 acre lake in East Texas. In 2005 and 2006 I put 30 lbs of Talapia in the lake and it kept the pond clean. Because of the die off this year I put in 8 grass carp that were about 20 lbs each. They did not clean the pond like the Talapia. Can I expect better results next year?

At 20 lbs. each, grass carp don't eat much. They are generally stocked at 10 to 11 inches and removed at 10 or so pounds. I doubt their effectiveness. If you can catch them, hang on. It'll be a wild ride.

What kind of vegetation problem are you trying to solve?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Grass carp don't particularly like filamentaeous algae but will eat it if they have not much else to eat. Tilapia on the other hand will clean it up. Last year when I had Tilapia I had no FA, this year I couldn't get any and my pond is loaded with it. I know people argue about stocking rates, but 8 doesn't seem like enough for 3 acres if you have much vegetation. Dave is right the bigger they get the less effective they are.

TPWD recommends 10 to 15 per acre.

Thanks guys. I guess next year I will go back to Talpia. I was not home when the fish were delivered. One died and so I saw it and it was big. I bought fish bigger than 12 inch, I guess I should have done a little more homework and been there when the fish were delivered. Live and learn!
