I know these don't get that big but look at this:  I have these in my pond along with hybrid longears and I love the colors. I cleaned a couple of 6 inch ones whole. They actually have a lot of meat for there size due to their shape. From my understanding they feast on snails like redears so I like that and they are aggresive, even attacking spinnerbaits. Anyone else have these? I also have bg, cnbg, gsf, lmb, bhcf:(, and gams.

keith, that's a beautiful creature. i love his red eye. i wish i had some, but to my knowledge they are not in CA waters. i felt lucky to just get some RES and regular BG along with my "native" GSF. sounds like you have a really fun pond and i bet he/she tasted good.
GSF are people too!

this one actually got released. He was more like 5 inches but was so colorful that it blew me away when I pulled him out. I like the red eyes too. The hybrids are cool too. I took a close up of one's head and side. I'll post a few of the ones I think are longears or le cross. I think the last two are leXgsf???? who knows

Are you sure pics # 1, 5, and 6 in this post are not green sunfish?
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

pretty sure due to smallish mouth but I do think the are gsf le cross. I could be totally wrong but I've looked at those particular fish before trying to figure out just that. The heavily striped gills and smaller mouths and more blue colors lead me to lean towards a le cross.

#1, 5 & 6 are definitely hybrids. They look like a green sunfish x long ear cross.
Teach a man to grow fish...
He can teach to catch fish...

My favorite lake used to have a lot of longears. At first I would get a little put off when I caught a lot of them. When I went to very light tackle, I began to appreciate them a bit more. They are fierce little fighters and often jump a time or 2. They bite very reliably, and take almost any bait. I guess their colors are is the most vivid of all the lepomis. I wish there was a Condello strain so I could stock some in my pond.
