I have never been able to catch bream on commercial bait & very little luck with small lures. Examples: Berkley Crappie Nibbles, red magggots, white maggots, wigglers, micros. From my point of view, they look fine, feel like one would expect, smell like fish, but only the smallest bream find them interesting. I have no problem catching bream by floating a small crust of bread & hook on the water.

Have others had success with these products? What other products have been successsful for you?

Beleave it or not I have caught most of my bream on night crawlers and cut bait. I can catch the little ones on about anything and just cut the tail off and use it. My bream will even hit well on liver. Use a small to medium hook. Good fishing.

For BG, I really prefer fly fishing with a black midge. Or, if I'm really serious, I use a cane pole with a chunk of night crawler.

I like the brown colored "Gulp" worms. They work very well, but maybe not quite as well as live bait IMO.

Real earthworms are the best bait I've used. Mealworms come in second. But among the artificials, Gulp Honeyworms are the best IME and work almost as good as mealworms. Another plus is they stay on the hook really well; I have caught as many as 10-12 BG on the same Honeyworm.

I think ghost shrimp is my favorite bait. The bream don't have to be bedding or especially hungry to hit shrimp.

Night crawlers are hard to beat all around. Bream tend to hit crickets viciously, which is very enjoyable, but you spend a lot of time putting on bait. Bedding bream sometimes bite on tent caterpillars, and I've caught 10-12 on 1 soggy, leathery caterpillar. Gambusia are fairly reliable bream bait, if the fish are hungry.

The artifical white grubs and red worms have worked well for me at times, but not as consistently as live bait. I like the way it stays on the hook fish after fish.

Number one natural is meal worms and superworms from the pet shop. Superworms skip the small fish but if the big ones are there work just as well as meal worms. Mealworms get bit easier when fish are slow to bite. Eathworms don't work for me anymore and that's weird since I caught plenty on them as a kid. Bread works great too but they nip at it.

I like the white food source grubs previously discussed for a synthetic but want to try the gulp too. Used gulp at the coast without much luck compared to natural.

I have abeen disappointed with Superworms. I think they are just very old, from the pet store. They smell terrible when lanced, sometimes black inside. Is this normal?
I have found 3 inch and less golden shiners topped the list in my pond before draining it.

For BG on sitting on beds a black ant fly with a casting bubble is a killer.

chunk of worm on barbless cheap medium sized fly (just about any fly will do) cast w/ 5wt or smaller (backpack) fly rod. the more the fly deteriorates, and the more the hook becomes exposed, the better........shhhhh.......dont tell my dad i fly fish w/ worms

if you can find them try crickets, and/or catalpa worms.

My wife decided she wanted to catch some BG on a Sunday evening after the bait shop was closed and I couldn't convince her that without crickets or worms her chances of success were slim. In spite of my best efforts, I could not discourage her and she proceeded to chunk up some Hebrew National Hot Dogs and I took here to the lake to pacify her. Well, all knowing husband was wrong again! Those big all American bluegills were wild about Hot Dogs. Try it
